i have been experiencing problems with win2k. in an effort to resolve them, i tried reinstalling the OS, it didn't like it and i can't boot up. i don't want to get in to that problem right now. here's what i did next:

I have an unused HD with win98 on it so i installed that as master and booted up. everything is fine, i can see the other HD with all my valuable data. the win98 hd is my c: and the other win2k is my d:. i installed nero so i could burn all my data and start from scratch.

i opened explorer and went through my d: drive and started deleting stuff i didn't need. i noticed i could not delete folders, just files. when i was done, i tried to empty recycle bin and got a disk write error, then locked up. now, every time i try to access the d: drive, i lock up. i can unplug it and browse c: drive all day long. i tried emptying recycle bin again, but it was empty. i noticed on one reboot when it was performing scan disk, it said something about checking cross related files or something. it went away before i could comprehend. what can do or try?

can't access d: drive in windows, it locks up. i haven't tried to see if dos can see d: drive still. if it can, how do you empty recycle bin from DOS? or restore recycle bin from DOS?

both drives were FAT, by the way

The Recycle bin is called RECYCLED in DOS. You need to unhide it like this:

attrib -h -s -r RECYCLED

Do that with a Win98 startup disk. You can then delete it entirely.

Firstable, with the problem you are having, you'll need to run DOS

SCANDISK /all /autofix /nosave

of if you don't have DOS

schedule a Disk scan and repair for all your HDDs

then reboot

that should fix those errors

THEN!! to remove ALL the Recycle Bins

from Inside Windows

all you need to do is

Dissable Recyle Bin by deleting files directly (on/off checkbox)

then go to each HDD and remove the Recycle Bin manually

after you are done

RE-enable Detele files to Recycle Bin

and now you have them all back and fixed :t

simple eh? ;)

I booted Win98 in safe mode and was able to see both disks so I just copied all my needed data over to win98 disk and did a clean install on the win2k disk, then restored everything. problem solved. thanks for the replies.
