What I mean is, I have 2 computers networked. Can I in some way have both of those computers ( or more when my friends are over as I have a hub ) playing the same game and at the same time playing that same game online or via modem, or is this asking too much? If so, how? If not, why not?

Been surfing around here a little and haven't seen this question, but I've always wondered (well not always, I think about other things sometimes:t ) if it would work.

Yep, you can........just start a multiplayer game and give your (outside) friends your ip. Remember to configure your firewall and/or router......hmmm...i hate routers.

I would have to guess though that not all games could do this...
