With water cooling my Slot1 Celeron 333 had been running at 500 mhz for a few months now. Yesterday night, i left the system on and due to hard water deposits in the water block, causing water blockage, cpu got overheated and got fried.... it's dead now. Right now i am using a spare PII 233 , which sucks btw.
This is where i need your valuable advice, suggestions and opinions.
I am using a Soyo SY-6VBA133 (http://www.soyousa.com/sy6vba133.html) motherboard and according to company specs it can support upto 933Mhz PIII.
I need a new Intel cpu OR AMD cpu + motherboard. The decision will be based upon performance, reliability, future compatibility and price.
The main uses of my system are high end gaming, a above average amount of video encoding and decoding, programming, and other processor power needing applications and uses (like tons of compressing and decompressing)... stuff like that.
Please advice me on which Intel CPU (i don't think i will go for P IV because of the exhorbitant price) or which AMD (CPU + compatible[best] motherboard) to go for.
I need the best.... future upgradability is very important.

If future upgradability is important, I'd go with a new AMD 760 mobo + T-bird 1 Ghz+, AXIA core.
The AXIA core Tbirds (10th week) are the best overclockers around--some have been hitting over 1.5 Ghz with air cooling. Plus, the 760 platform is currently the fastest and takes the most advantage of DDR memory. It's also upgradable--it'll support Palamino and Thoroughbred chips when they become available.

hey, thanks. You know, i want to get the best performance for the lowest possible cost... ( i have already spend more than a reasonable amount of maoney on the system for various upgrades and "crazes" over the last year....)
don't wanna empty my wallet.
price is important...... please remember that i already have an intel board capable of 933mhz pIII...... so if i go for AMD, then combined motherboard and cpu costs and performance should be better than the intel alternatuves...
thanks

Vintron,
Pick up a PIII 750 for about $105 and overclock it to 1 GHz. Easy solution. BTW is your RAM PC133? If it is not, see if your MB supports the memory running at FSB - 33 MHz, then you will be ok. If not, then you may want to pick up some PC133 RAM running about $50 for a 256 MB stick. If you do not want to buy RAM, then get a Celeron 566 and overclock it to 850. They are $50.

Go for the PIII, btw you can go to 1 GHz without a problem. Remember even if the MB says it can only go so far, it all boils down to the FSB it offers. The multiplier is in the CPU so what the MB supports really doesn't matter.

that craze is almost gone
Where did you hear that? That's like saying that hotrodding is going out of style!! People are taking the newest, fastest cars out there and still making them faster, new exhaust, new engine computers, high flow intakes, etc....
People will always go for getting more bang for their buck!!

I dunno Richard...I was thinkin that, but he just wants to know what would be the "BEST DEAL". That last part squeezes it in here, right? Or better yet, where should this post be?

edited to ask where the idea o/c'g was a passing phase came from? I'm thinking he meant he's not bothering anymore...
