i have both cable and dsl currently until i descide which i like best. but i wanted to know if i could bridge the 2 networks together. i have 2 linksys routers and i know they have some features to work with other routers. i just need to know how to configure them correctly i think. examply both cable and dsl won't let u browse there newsgroups unless you are on there service so i need to direct the pc's to use each different link if they need that service. whould also like to see if i can do the same for say irc and run multiple fserv's or ftp's on one box and have it use both services. i know i can't bond the 2 under one service but i want to get it to work with 2 services one ftp/fserv for each broadband service on one machine.

Run one service to each PC and install an extra NIC in each for your LAN. You'll need a crossover cable too, unless you have a third hub.

can you do it with only one pc. i have an switch besides the 2 routers.

Windows doesn't have the ability to split various ports between two TCP/IP stacks, I'm afraid.

is that because you can only have one default gateway? i would love to find a way to use multiple gateways. figure it would also make a good feature of windows.

Oh - you can have multiple gateways, but you can only use one TCP/IP stack at a time. The stack contains thousands of ports. Port 80 is the http port. Games use specific ports. You can't tell Windows to use port one connection for port 80 and another for port 21.

can my linksys router's be configured to send sertian address to certain gateways? like i need news.verizon.net to use the verizon dsl side for me to access it. and i need cables newsgroups to be gotten from cable side. i figure i should beable to do this through a static port maping, just not quite sure how.

Yes - in Port Forwarding. You select the port and packet type and have it sent to a specific internal IP. It only works on inbound connections and it will send those packets only to the IP you specify. In other words, the other PC will not be able to use those services.

Frankly, I think you have too much time on your hands. You need a girlfriend or two. :p

There's something we all agree on - two of "things" is good. :D

you will not be able to accomplish what you want with the hardware you have. you would need a real router or a server to direct traffic for you. win2k can do this with static routes. You can set specific routes or IP ranges to send info through.

in general, cable is capable of faster speeds for less money.

you can also "shotgun" the two connections together with certain routers. check out this one from nexland:

there has got to be a way to duplicate this router with my linksys routers or with windows at least.

Man - with all of the knowledge gathered here saying NO, why are you so insistent? Why do you need to do this anyway? Use one for a day and the other for a day. You should know within 30 days which you want to keep.

well cuz there is hardware that can do this. and its done in the business world all the time. so how is it that i can't? what feature is missing. and windows should beable to do any router function. why not this?

Oh you can do it - with Windows 2000 Server. Got $800?

That's with a single ISP though. How are you gonna do DNS with two different ISPs?

i have student eval copy of win2k server, i am trying to get beta .net 03. dns can be handled by either isp dns server.

I think it's a lot of trouble to do all of this. Like I said, cable is the better bang for the buck. Why don't you just try one for a couple days, then try the other?

well its for for learning then anything else

i think i found my solution for now. i have both gateways on one net both have dhcp disabled and statically assigned boxes. basically configureing routes so that when i connect to my newsgroup it goes to another router. the only thing i can't do is load balance. so that www will only come from cable, but at least my newsgroups will be split and that was my main concern. the others i can configure routes to specific things. like 2 ftps or 2 fserves. and all with the static routing.
