I have a 3com office connect(not that it matters), and want to know if there is a way around the slow initialization, while still leaving the use of my cable modem after boot...

Steve KillerBug 08-11-1999, 05:21 PM If it inicializes after the hard drives, you can tell your computer to wait for up to 30 second while the hard drives warm up, that should be enough extra time. steveakaflash 08-11-1999, 05:51 PM How do I tell the comp. to do this? Is it in the bios? I guess ill have to search for it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Steve Joel Kleppinger 08-11-1999, 06:57 PM Actually, what KillerBug suggests slows down your PC any more because it waits a set amount of time before intializing the IDE devices. This is for old hard drives that had very slow spin-up times. I get the impression you are loading the DOS drivers for your network card. If so, why? That could be your problem right there. Regardless, initialization time is a thing of the driver, and I know of no way to speed it up. That in no way means it isn't possible, but I can't help you there. I just try to get a little extra sleep during boot time (another thing the IDE delay is good for http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif). BBA 08-11-1999, 08:46 PM What protocols are you running? If you run protocols that broadcast for other PC's (like netbui) you will have serious delays in initializing. If the DHCP server is slow to respond to TCP/IP calls, then it will hang the PC whenever it has to renew the leased IP address. I would suggest only running TCP/IP if you have a cable modem, as that is the only protocol they offer and any other is just head room robbing network wastage! BBA steveakaflash 08-11-1999, 09:36 PM Nope, i'm just running TCP, no netbui...It's just that 10 second pause with no disk activity that bugs me, and it didnt do it before my nic card/cable modem..ohh well Steve Plane Dum 08-11-1999, 11:29 PM On the same note, I had (?) to install netbuei to get my cards to negotiate. Should I delete TCP/IP to relieve head room. Also how does W98SE figure into this.(3 comps networked W/dialup modem. SysOpt.com
