Just put together a new system. AMD 1.33, MSI K7T266R. Everything seems fine until I hit the user login with W2K. I can not type anything on the keyboard. It works fine in BIOS and DOS. Safe mode startup will not work either. I have unplugged everything but the video card and 1 HD with no luck. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi moabtwo

I had what sounds like the same exact problem on two existing systems with W2K (a PIII and Athlon). KB worked in DOS/BIOS, but no KB or mouse action at the W2K login and was unable to gain access to the OS. Didn't work in Safe Mode, either.

It happened to me on each system *after* making alterations in the Registry on different application removal entries - did you possibly make regedit changes just before this happened?

After swapping and verifying it wasn't the KB, the only way I could restore KB use and OS entry was to use my backup drive to verify it wasn't hardware problem. I then had to reinstall W2K in both instances on my primary hdds.

Sorry this isn't much help, but I had to respond because if this is the same problem you're having, I have to say I didn't have much luck finding a reason why it happened nor a solution, even after consulting several IT pros.

It would be great if someone DOES know what causes this and workaround / solution and posted it. I'm still very leery of regediting now unless I ghost my drive first.

Thanks for the info, lets me know I am not the only one at least. I didn't do any reg edits. Basically, pulled my existing MB and reinstalled it with new cpu and mem. Same peripherals as before.

Your problem sounds exactly the same though.

Did any of you guys try
a different keyboard ???

Keyboards have drivers too,
maybe a diferent manufactorer ???

My computer does something like this. On mine, it's the mouse.

I use mobile racks to choose OSes: Linux, Win98SE or Win2KPro.

The mouse always works in 98 or Linux. Fails about 25% of the time in Win2K

Yes, I had swapped out KBs and rats on the systems both times.

I have one KB/rat on a KVM and it worked on the Cel500 ME box, but not the other W2K when this problem happened on the Intel W2K.

It really threw me; happened twice in one weekend after separate regedits on two separate W2K systems (first the Intel W2K, then it happened again on the newer Athlon W2k). No explanations or even clues yet as to what caused it.

I always back up before regediting now.. even the simple stuff. I still hold my breath if I'm rebooting, hoping the login works. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

moabtwo - any luck?
