Hello,
I tried a search on Sysopt before posting.
I've got ADSL using a D-Link 3000I dsl modem
, it goes through a D-Link 704 gateway /router.

During off hours our service is great, but lately at 5:00pm
(prime time?) the service dies or is intermittent.
I'm using Netpersec and you can see the download speeds
go down to nothing.
When I call support, the first question they ask, " is the RJ11 Cable from the jack to the modem over 10 feet and is it on a splitter" at the jack?

I tell them it is loner 12-20 feet and this wasn't a self install,
but the phone guy installed the splitter at the demarc and tested and everything was fine.

That gives them pause.

Is there a desirable length for the above?

I'm using Win98SE on both PC's with CAT5 ethernet and everything was fairly stable for the first 8 months of the year.
The nic's are D-link 530tx's
Thanks

your cable length shouldn't be a problem... more than likely NetPerSec's servers are busy as a lot of companies will send data at this time and then folks are getting home from work, school, etc.

Netpersec is just a line speed meter, not an IP. I've seen posts like yours at xDSL forums at www.dslreports.com. The Ameritech forum there is a very good one, with some official Ameritech/SBC/Yahoo reps frequenting the place.

Typically -- given what you say about this issue happening at around 5pm -- they suggest there may be some form of electrical interfence, maybe a halogen lamp near the line or modem/router, or a light (or other device) on a dimmer switch that gets used around that time, sometimes a street lamp near the xDSL/voice line that comes on. There is a technique using an AM radio tuned to a null section on the AM band, that you can use as sort of a "noise detector" and snoop around near your DSL cables, modem and router, even looking outside between your house and the provider's pole.

You may want to check out http://www.dslreports.com/forum/ilec,am and post your problem there... the DSL experts are generally very helpful.

RJ11?!?!?! That is telephone cord! I'm so surprised no one noticed that.

Yes, DSL connects through a regular telephone line to the modem. A good DSL modem connects to the computer through a NIC or router. My RJ11 line is 15 feet.

the line that goes from my PIB to my jack (solid Cat5e) is about a good 30-40 feet. And my PIB connects to a bridge through an RJ75 connector  and then the phone cord is about 5 feet :D
