I just read an article on the Register that Gateway is backing out of a deal with AMD to build machines with the Athlon. "Why?" do you ask... Because INTEL stepped in. They're going to give Gateway a massive discount if they turn their back on AMD! This is crazy! I am so sick of Intel! I used to kinda like Gateway, but NO MORE.
Lemme hear what you guys (and Gals) think about this loonyness!

That is total Bull****, what the hell is up with Intel, they are nothing but a bunch of pricks. Obviously they want AMD to go bankrupt, I think they need to shove their processors up their ***, except for my celeron cause I like it, but I dont like what they are doing to AMD.

There may be a couple of factors causing this.
1. Intel gave them a better price.
2. Maybe Gateway had some failures from AMD that were too high and affected production schedules.
3. AMD may not have been able to meet Gateways production schedule.
I'm just guessing here on this stuff. However, I'm sure AMD would do the same thing to Intel if they could. Someone else will probably pick up AMD, well we hope anyway. But as cruel as it sounds, that's business. If you can close the deal, do it as they say. This is a very emotional issue for many people. Of course we can't forget what Intel said about us users, That we were the problem with software piracy. That still irates me.

Well not every big company will bow to the will of the mighty Intel:

I'm unsure about #2 and #3, but #1 is quite accurate!
And you're right, it is business.
... and you are also right about AMD sticking it to Intel, if they could... but my problem with the whole thing is that NO ONE CAN STICK IT TO INTEL! Intel does all the sticking!
They stick it to AMD by lowering their prices for OEMs that can't be matched (Let's see if the end-user sees some of that discount)...
They stick it to customers by adding unwanted features (the **** processor serial number).
I am so pissed at Intel (and Microsoft, for that matter), and just when it seems AMD has them beat with Gateway, Intel tightens their icy grip on the computer industry shriveled nutsack.

I'd rather have a company trying to make me happy than one feeding me a bunch of FUD and selling products driven more by marketing than engineering. If Intel makes people like us happy, it is by accident, and steps are taken to reverse the error. Why does the Celeron run on 66Mhz bus? Because if it ran on 100Mhz bus there would be no product differentiation between it and the High End product line. The engineers at Intel can build some amazing stuff, but marketing makes the decisions and adds a shovel of BS to it to create the product we see.
I've been watching Athlon development for some time now. (On a Celeron machine http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif) The design is sound, it packs more FPU and Interger power per clock cycle than any current shipping Intel product, and unless you live under a rock you should be able to see that by now. The NDAs are over and independant benchmarks abound.
Now, truthfully, I am just shooting off exactly what BBA expected to hear. I do believe what I say, perhaps more than I should without having seen an Athlon in action. However, BBA is shooting down an AMD product based on his perception of past product performance. (I differ a bit, the K6 1-3 all do dog on 3d gaming, but they spank on office applications) Much as AMD likes you to think otherwise (much like Intel really) they have not put out a new CPU core in years. Die shrinks and Mhz leaps, with a few extra features have kept them going. The K6-3 is just a K6 with 3dnow, 256k on die L2 cache, and write combining. (The P3 is a PPro with 1/2 core speed cache, SSE and MMX...) The K7 Athlon is a new beast entirely. It shares a few features, but the architecture is new and fresh. Intel has a long way to go before they release something as different, and Merced is not going to find its way into your average gamer's PC very quickly at all.

Who was it that said "Business is War"
and
Who was it that said "All's Fair in Love and War"...
I sure wish I had the time and $$ to run out and get me an Athlon. I hope AMD gives Intel a good fight. To keep it competitive.

That will probably be VIA. They will do it just for the SLOT A (EV6). Then fire everyone. Then modify the WinChip it fit in the SLOT A and sell that **** to us poor folk.

Well BBA, you stirred up some real emotions there. But I must agree with you to a point. The sad thing about AMD CPU's is we don't know how well they work until months after they are released. And for those who sell them, it's a big gamble. Look at the patches that were needed for 95 on 350 and below (I believe it was). As much as those who assemble them for resale, we hesitate sometimes in selling them because we don't want them to come back due to problems with the CPU or a patch that's needed to make it run.
There is a lot of technology in that chip design. And it takes alot to make it compatiable with many programs, BIOS, motherboards, etc. I just hope AMD can hang in there long enough to make a reliable chip that we don't have to worry about.
What would be nice is for some company to buy AMD. If they have deep pockets, then I think they could catch up to Intel in many areas. I think we need to be reminded that these companies are creating the future. And unless they have the personnel to support it, they are going to struggle.
I would gladly switch if AMD would improve there track record.
I can add more to this, but it's long enough. It's time to go back and help other users.

If the facts are true about Gateway, then yah for us users!!!! That means there will be a bigger supply of K7s for us!!!! Besides, I dislike Gateways just because they use Intel Motherboards with that horrible Phoenix BIOS!!!! IRQ sharing piece of junk!!! LOL Long live ASUS and ABIT Motherboards!!!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Sorry for the above statement, but I am a bit "BIOSed"!!! Not only $200 dollars less, it has L1 the size/speed of a celerons L2, and it has Xeon L2, going from 512k to 8mb. On top of that, it goes up to 700mhz, faster than any Intel! Screw gateway 2000, they make ****. You cannot even upgrade your CPU without pulling out the entire mobo, and despite what they might have you believe, that yourware is a joak for 4 reaons:
1.) By the time you are done paying for it, you have payed more than what you would have payed in the first place to keep it.
2.) At the end of 2 years you have to give it back, nothing to show.
3.) Durring the 2 years you cannot upgrade it at all, it is a lease.
4.) How many times have you upgraded your computer in the last 24 months?

Just noticed I reposted. One other thought, the price of the motherboards, they are a lot higher for slot B, and they are not overclocker boards.

Exactly which two reasons were you referring to?
Yea... Pick 2!
No, if the K7 is $200 cheaper than the P3, which is only $220 for a 450 that will do 600 with a good mb, then how much will it really cost?
Lets look at prices for that 8M L2 K7... Oops, we cant! Bummer.
I appreciate the AMD approach, but as for the technology, they have allways dissapointed everyone. Especially when it comes time to sit next to a guy with a Intel chip, or when they want to upgrade the video card and can't get it to work right.
No, don't get me wrong, I almost bought a K6-3, 350, and luckily I got a chance to put one thru it's paces first, so I saw the real performance was no better than my P233 MMX at the time, and a P2 233 dogged both.
Intel may be a big bully company, I can agree, but It has a better track record than AMD and that says more than advertisement to me!
Would you judge a criminal by his past behavior or let him free because he talks a good story?
I just think having your eyes closed to the obvious is a shame, and it's the reason people elected the liar, err- president clinton--- so in an off-beat kinda way, this whole thread is good for people!
I still luv ya Virus, ya silly nook!

My only disappointment with AMD was because of the Via chipset that was not compatible with my cd recorder. In terms of the chip itself, AMD has a lot to offer. According to the new specs, the K7 550 will outperform the Pentium 3 at the same speed. The only problem I see is that you need a fast hard drive and video card to take advantage of the new bus speed. This new chip is the first multi-processor from AMD. As I say before, I think there is plenty of possiblities. Finally, Intel got some competition!

There is a lot of excitement about the AMD k7 which outperforms Intel's P3 and it is $200.00 less expensive. According to the press release, the Amd will be the hottest chip in the market. So, the customers will get good performance at moderate prices. I am also waiting for the IBM new chip.
