Gentle Giant 05-30-1999, 09:32 AM http://www.westerndigital.com/products/drives/lifeguardfacts.html This is actually WD site that mentions what S.M.A.R.T. is. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Stevo 05-30-1999, 05:38 PM ok, but does it run all the time? or just at boot? does it work like a virus checker? Gentle Giant 05-30-1999, 09:27 PM Dont know - you'll have to do some research. Let us know what you find. Bleeding Edge 05-30-1999, 11:13 PM SMART is enabled/disabled from the BIOS of a motherboard that supports this feature, to a drive that has this feature built into it. When this Bios setting is enabled, it tells the drive to send self-monitoring signals via the data cable from a chip on the drive. The drive sends a signal to the Bios to let it know it's feeling "a bit whoosy these days and thinks it will be retiring soon." Seagate describes it better. http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/faq/smart.shtml DavidX 05-31-1999, 10:25 AM oops! sorry! [This message has been edited by DavidX (edited 05-31-99).] Dmitry Vergel 04-24-2001, 05:47 AM Hi, Try Active SMART ( http://wwww.ariolic.com/activesmart/index.html ) - it's one of the best S.M.A.R.T. utilities. Nighthawk 04-24-2001, 09:13 AM Norton Disk Doctor will also pick up SMART errors. It saved me from a crash on one of my 5G Maxtors in time for me to get the drive in under warranty (4 years is pretty good warranty, you must admit). Most motherboards have it off by default to save "memory" but I doubt it takes up much. I leave it on because it's better to be safe than sorry. Stevo 04-25-2001, 06:29 AM Guys, How far back was this post? did you check the date I posted it? Thanks anyway Steve djurom 04-26-2001, 02:41 PM It's the thought that counts http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif nunyadam 04-26-2001, 04:51 PM he could be addicted to sysopt. unfortunately this some times leads to the revival of,or longevity of thread's such as the hamster thread, cat's in the kettle,do not reply to this post,or the never ending story. nunya SysOpt.com
