ok, but does it run all the time? or just at boot? does it work like a virus checker?

Dont know - you'll have to do some research.
Let us know what you find.

SMART is enabled/disabled from the BIOS of a motherboard that supports this feature, to a drive that has this feature built into it. When this Bios setting is enabled, it tells the drive to send self-monitoring signals via the data cable from a chip on the drive. The drive sends a signal to the Bios to let it know it's feeling "a bit whoosy these days and thinks it will be retiring soon."

Seagate describes it better. http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/faq/smart.shtml

Hi,
Try Active SMART ( http://wwww.ariolic.com/activesmart/index.html ) - it's one of the best S.M.A.R.T. utilities.

Norton Disk Doctor will also pick up SMART errors. It saved me from a crash on one of my 5G Maxtors in time for me to get the drive in under warranty (4 years is pretty good warranty, you must admit).

Most motherboards have it off by default to save "memory" but I doubt it takes up much. I leave it on because it's better to be safe than sorry.
