hi all. a few of us over here want to start hosting some LAN parties. i was "voluteered" to build the server. (yea me...) anyways, being as money is VERY tight, i have made a list of components that are cheap, but seem viable for a server. please let me know what you think, suggestions, comments, anything. thanks in advance.

Game Server Specs...

T-bird 1.4GHz
ECS K7VMM+
512MB PC2100 or PC133*
TNT2 or on-board**
Fujitsu 13GB HD 5400RPM
other basics

* would we all really notice a difference in gameplay between using PC2100 vs. PC133? (remember, money is tight)
** does the server (not being played on) need a graphics accelerator? we will be playing games like serious sam, quake3, and america's army online.

Specs are just fine. Go with the pc133. It will save you some money. I dont think you will notice a difference when playing. The server needs the graphic accelerator so you can see the monitor;) You didn't forget about that too did you!?!;) A friend of mine is building a server. He is using 1ghz proc, 512pc133, 10gb HD.

You need a graphics card to view the monitor but thats about it, a TNT2 should be all that is needed, even that is "overkill" i suppose.

So for a server what is the most important thing that you need?
That is a game server.

Just wondering.

For a game server all thats needed is plenty of CPU power and RAM, both of which are covered here. Although the CPU may only be 1.4ghz as the game as such wont be playing on it it will be actign solely as a server
