JonathanB 01-14-2003, 06:22 PM I am still using a 540mb Seagate, he he for swap file. tony_j15 01-14-2003, 07:58 PM I have a 1.4 GB Samsung from 96. I use it for swap file too. BipolarBill 01-14-2003, 08:00 PM SCSI - any SCSI drive. IDE drives in regular use rarely last longer than 5 years. Most never get that sort of use though because they get demoted to "D" status within 3 years. Longest lived IDE brands are Maxtor and Seagate, but even that varies by batch. extreme_gamer 01-14-2003, 08:28 PM SCSI's are pricy! ... well, from pricewatch that is. would you recommend buying from pricewatch.com? or from a big computer sales place? BipolarBill 01-14-2003, 08:41 PM How about a 15,000RPM 36GB IBM SCSI drive with an LSI adapter and an LVD cable for $250? http://www.storagereview.com/cgi-bin/news_archive.pl/10 Check out the HyperMicro deal. Sign up at Storage Review while you're there. It's a great site and forum. P.S. Don't forget to mention SR and order the cable and adapter! Bovon 01-14-2003, 09:17 PM Personally I like the eany-meany-miney-moe brand. Never had one to fail. Secondly, I suppose it would have to be Maxtors Peter M 01-15-2003, 05:12 AM Question is way too generic. Every manufacturer has ever had several product lines with vastly different sturdiness (and price). That said, the rule of thumb for new drives is that today's IDE drives are built to offer huge capacities at a low price, while SCSI drives are made for performance and reliability. The oldest drive I recently used was a Seagate ST157N-1 (46 MB SCSI) from back in the Atari days (around 1990), and the oldest working drive I own is a 10 MByte Micropolis brick (5,25" full height, two of today's drive bays) from 1983 or so. ConfusedAlien 01-15-2003, 09:22 AM lol these are going to be all opinions here lol...myself, well let me tell YOU lol I like my IBMs mmmkay? I dont care if you dont like'em, I DO. lol Quantums fireballs are good. WD has some problems I guess, lol I heard some samples just DIE after a WEEK. I think im starting war lol:D BipolarBill 01-15-2003, 09:30 AM I think you have your head in the sand. Quantum was absorbed by Maxtor. Some drives never work. Every single IDE IBM I ever bought died within 2 years. I heard that yo momma got banned from TechIMO... Bigjakkstaffa 01-15-2003, 11:00 AM gotta be Seagate, got a five year old 4gb medalist still workign well :) --Jakk:t Swordfish 01-15-2003, 01:39 PM 1gb fujitsu(95 make)...4.3Gb Seagate Medallist( good drive) no bad sectors either. I feel with IDE as the size and rotation speed increased so did the dying factor as well. AllGamer 01-15-2003, 01:49 PM Maxtors the last the longest 95% of my HDDs are maxtor and has and still lasting as long and probably even after my existance :p but brands from Seagate, Samsung, WD and other less known has died a few times already :t so Maxtor gets my Vote extreme_gamer 01-16-2003, 02:01 AM what are your opinions on western digital hd's? do you know that wd's are not very good? Bigjakkstaffa 01-16-2003, 03:22 AM WD's are the boys when it comes to HDD's ATM --Jakk:t BipolarBill 01-16-2003, 09:45 AM I love WDs. They may not be the longest lasting, but they are not the worst either. While they work, they work better than most too. As stated, it all depends on the model and batch. SysOpt.com
