I am running Windows XP Pro on my home computer and just recently noticed a problem with the system restore. I use the system restore all the time to create restore points before I install any new software. Just the other day I decided to roll back a month to freshen up the machine after installing all kinds of Christmas **** software.

Now when I go into the system restore and attempt to choose a restore point, it will only let me choose restore points from January 2003 and nothing before then. It will not even let me scroll back a month in the calendar to choose an earlier month. I tried to trick the machine by changing the system date and then going back into the system restore screen. Doing that will let me see the full calendar for last year but there are no restore points available. Is this a glitch? Please tell me Microsoft wasn’t so stupid that they set the restore points to auto delete?

You have a slide control to adjust how much Hard Drive Space you want to allocate to System Restore.

The more space you allocate, the more Restore Points will be retained.

However, even at the maximum setting, the older points will be eliminated as the allocated space is exhausted.

It is the same with Windows ME.

This is dumb, they should give you the option to leave a particular restore point permanent so you can always go back to it or have the option to select any restore point and make it undeletable, at least 1 point.

Then after 90 days which is the time to live the restore point deletes automatically, guess this is where a drive image comes in.

HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q301224) is the ms explanation.
