I'm building a unit using Asus A7V motherboard. The system won't boot when I put in a memory stick on the second (middle) slot. It just gives a series of long beeps that indicated RAM error. However, when I leave the second memory slot empty, the system boots okay.
Is this a motherboard problem or am I missing something in the installation?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to SysOpt! :)
Are you using two sticks of memory or only one? If you're using two, try swapping them between slots and see if the error persists. Otherwise, if the stick works on the first slot, both the motherboard and RAM are probably working OK - check the motherboard's manual to see if they say anything about installing RAM that way.
Specify the motherboard's model - Asus' site may have important information on the subject; keep in touch :)

I want to use 3 sticks. However, everytime I put one on the second (middle) slot, the system fails to boot, and instead I hear a series of beeps, which indicates a RAM error code. Right now, the PC is working with memory stick on the first and third slot. Is this weird or what?

I have seen that before on a Tyan Tomcat - it would accept 256MB sticks in 1 and 3, but no more.
Some slots may be limited to certain densities. Check the motherboard manual.

I'm using (or trying to use 3 pieces of 128MB sticks). The manual doesn't say anything about memory slot limitations. Since the mobo is Asus, I would expect that there shouldn't be a problem like this. Unless I got a lemon.

Could be. :( Have you tried different sticks in different slots?

I had problems with 128mb in my 2nd dimm slot on my Asus P2B-F. It would boot fine and run most things without a problem. The only place where it would cause a problem was in 3d apps. I was running 3dmark2000 (not 3dmark2001) and it would crash during the texture rendering speed tests. I put in a 64mb module in dimm slot 2 and had no problems anywhere. These sticks all tested fine.
