I never played the first one so I didn't know what the game play would be like. I haven't really caught on. I just feel like I'm going around beating on little goblins and am not using the full potential of magic and etc. I really enjoy story lines and character development so I would appreciate any help on a better understanding of the game play and any pointer on character development if anyone has any.

You learn powerful and really cool magical spells later in the game, mages become a must for your team as you come across monsters like TROLLS which can only be killed by fire.
Its a great game, i wish i still had it :(

I'm sure its like most of the other BG type games, just take a little while to get rolling. I played past the first chapter on my old pc but I havent installed it yet on my new pc to finish it.

The problem is I have never played a BG game so I have no point of reference. From what I have read and such is that it is good to have mostly fighter classes with a couple of magic using classes. Send the fighter in to attack and then cast spells with the two magic classes from further away.

In all the BG games (i've played them all) it makes sense to have a rounded team. You can do all fighters or all mages etc but you run into problems usually early on with finding enough equipment or spells etc and you have trouble with mages attacking you if you have no spellcasters and if you have all mages your party is really weak physically if you get meleed.
I usually have a fighter (me), a ranger as a secondary fighter and crossbowman, a rogue/theif to pick locks etc, a mage and a cleric. Usually if there are more characters I get another fighter. I'm a brute force kind of guy.
Its good to be well rounded though as taht troll example. They only die by fire or acid so you either need arrows or you need a spell (or a rare blade). And mages and clerics offer great healing and protection from magic which comes in handy when you have fighters rushing in.
I'd recommend playing BG1 adn 2 if you never have, EXCELLENT games.
