My roommate has started having some very odd problems with her WinXP Pro install.

Her system will lock up if left on and unattended for any length of time, and when she shuts it down to reboot her Windows install is corrupted and she has to either repair or reinstall her OS.

The Hard Drive is has one primary partition (C: ) an extended partition with two logical drives (D: and E: ) and some unformatted space for a future FreeBSD or Linux install. The really odd thing is that the corruption only occurs 1) when the system is left unattednded and 2) on the C: partition. The drive is formatted in FAT32. Neither her D: nor E: drives suffer any problems.

The system specs are as follows:

Athlon XP 2400+
Asus A7N266-VM AA (nforce 220-D) Motherboard
256MB PC2100 DDR (PNY)
ATI All-In-Wonder Rage 128 Pro 32mb AGP
WD 60GB 5400 RPM HD
HP 9100i CDRW
250W PSU (140W TCO and 108W +12V)

My own thought is that it's the PSU, which is scheduled to be replaced as soon as she gets more money.

Ideas anyone?

Try an updated av scan and make sure the virus check in bios is disabled, if you can try another hdd see if problem continues you'll need to rule out some parts since it sounds like a device doing it til you get a new psu which could be going bad.

She did an AV scan no more than 48 hours before, I think it was the previous night.

Her BIOS AV had been enabled but is disabled now.

Sounds like it could be driver issues and thier interaction with the apci,"I think that's what its called. My girlfriends computer needed an updated onboard video driver. The system was set to hibernate after a period instead I got bsod's. Check out the settings for that. Who knows, I hope it's that simple......

I wish it were. So far we've tried to turn off every single form of power-saving in the BIOS and the OS just because I don't find them at all stable.
