Warning, if your video card does not support it, you won't be able to play DX games and will be stuck using openGL because DX is not uninstallable... I say, stick with waht you have...

So how would you know if your VC support Dx9?

GF2 are DX7 cards and plenty of people play modern games!!! I had a Voodoo 2 and that would play games under DX8!!!

Compatibility is the name of the game, DX8 cards were compatible if they had Hardware T&L (didn't stop other cards rendering it in software mode tho - drivers).

DX9 is meant to speed things up, offer new gizmo's and gadgets, but I haven't really seen an improvement.

That's a given, I've seen people use it perfectly well..
Make sure that you have read right before posting anything...

When I speak about Video Cards not being able to support DX8, I mean older cards...much older cards and some middle aged cards(a few). I'm speaking about cards like the Riva 128...not 128 Megs.

From personal experience with a Riva 128 and DX8.1, I got no response form games...BUt in OpenGL mode, it worked but the quality was a bit shoddy.

Well, it works good w/ my ATI Radeon 7000 64mb gpx card. It raised my benchmarks up 200 points.:cool: Graphics do look better.

Oh come on Stix, what kind of fool would try and use such an old card as the Riva 128 with newer games? it wouldn't even start probably!

Stefan is correct, you can play games with your VC no matter if the DX is new, unless you have an ancient card.

I always wait until the reports have come out before I install any upgrade. If a DirectX upgrade doesn't agree with your system, (even with updated video drivers this is not uncommon) it can cause all kinds of problems.

And, as the man said, it is difficult to uninstall it properly in Windows 9.x systems. But perhaps the Driver Rollback feature in Windows XP can restore the system to its previous state.

Has anyone done this successfully?

I have installed Dx9 and so far so good. If your vid card won't support Dx9 then the install will tell you that it's not supported when it tries to instal it.

Here's a short list of DX versions with key features of each release:

DX 6 Windows 98 Default
DX 7 Introduces Hardware T&L
DX 8 Pixel and Vertex Shaders
DX 9 Fully Floating Point Pixel Pipelines.

The TNT2 and Voodoo 3 are DX 6 class cards, the Geforce/Geforce2 and Radeon were DX 7, the Gf3/4(Ti) and Radeon 8500 are DX 8 cards, and the R300 based cards support DX 9 in hardware.

Each DX version is backwards compatible, and any features that aren't supported in hardware are emulated in software.

Never said that I was doing hardcore gaming with a Riva 128...why would I? I was just speaking from experience and I don't need that ****...I asked a question and it was to one person in particular, not you! Sorry but that's the way it is...

Installed DX9... no problems at all. 3Dmark2001SE score went up 300 points right off the bat... weird, but in a good way ;) , weird because something from M$ actually works right away without problems... nah, can't be, something has to happen, always does. This functionality is very suspicious... :x
SuhWeeet, DX9 should work on your system, but the video card will not be able to use all features because it is a DX8 card, just like my Gf4Ti4200 is a DX8 card. But DX9 has all DX8 features as well except they've been optimized.

Yep i got both DX9 and 42.01 drivers but i cant even bench it cause 3dmark2001se does not support DX9.

btw a 50 point rise in 3dmarks does not mean anything, if u bench it multiple times u will see that the result always differes +/-50

3Dmark2001SE doesn't support DX9 so you can't actually bench any DX9 features, but it will still run on a system with DX9 and/or DX9 video card. Even if a 3Dmark2003 or whatever is released supporting DX9, it'll do all of us DX8 card owners no good because some of the tests will have "no hardware support". But you should still be able to run it.

The 42 drivers fix a lot of bugs. I use them with 8.1.

So you are saying that a Geforce2 Ti would have a better score with this new directx 9? or would it end up hindering it altogether? I downloaded the 41 drivers for my gainward geforce2 ti and the **** thing wouldnt even install. WHats up with that?
