Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Please help my uncle out and he is only getting 16 color !!!
Hi guys,
My uncle recently got a AMD Duron PC with Windows 98 SE on it and he asked me to format everything on his C drive and install Windows 2000 Professional on it, so I did it for me. Everything is fine except when i go into the device manage I got 2 exclamation marks under "Other devices", they are Video Controller (VGA Compatible) and the other one is PCI Simple Communications Controller (I believe that is for the Internal modem). Unfortunately, he has no driver, no motherboard menu and no recovery CD, so may I know if you were me, what would be the best approach to fix my uncle's problem. In other words, where I can find and download the appropriate driver for this particular computer / Pc ??
Please kindly help him out. Thanks in advance for your help !

You need to select the type of graphics card in Device manager! Right-click the "Video Controller" entry and select properties/Driver/Update, maybe windows will identify it for you and select the correct driver. with the Modem just select a Generic 56k driver if you don't know what make it is, or download a driver and save it to floppy for transfer to your uncles macjhine.

Thanks for your help but he has no documentation, no manual , no cd driver, nothing at all.
So I guess may be I have to open the cse and start from there.
Have a nice weekend, guys.

It sounds like he has onboard video and a built in modem as well.
Neither one will be very easy to fix in Win2k. There most probabely will not be any drivers available for either of them if you can identify them. Check the BIOS for more details.

One other thought... I fixed an older on-board video pc for a friend a while back (think it may have been an old Quantex). Anyway, during the OS reinstall, after the OS was loaded we had to make sure the chipset drivers were installed before we had success with installing video drivers.
After you find out who the mobo manufacturer is, you'll want to hit their website and locate all applicable chipset and component drivers.
If the CPU is using AMD Duron 900Mhz, however, I don't know the make and model of the motherboard, so how do I know which chipset software is right for that PC then ??
Please kindly shed some more light on this problem.

Use AIDA32 to get more information about the system.

I'm with omega31 on this one. AIDA32 will give you a list of everthing in the pc. From that you can search for updated drivers for each component in device manager.

You could also go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and see if it offers you any drivers. They may not be the latest and greatest drivers that the manufacturers have to offer, but they'll be pretty close and should be enough to get it up and running.

After downloading Aida32, I will have to agree with Omega31, this is where you need to go to get information about your computer. I have to say it gives you everything but the time of day. Good Luck:t
P.S. Thanks Omega31 for the information.
