What is Cross-Connect?

i'm doing a research about the broadcast cross-connect. But i know nothing about it. Can someone tell me where can i get the information about it.

Anyway, i know that the cross-connect is look like a switch that switching the input to the output. But i dont know whether the signal from the input should be mix with any carrier.
