What can I use to emulate a mac with at least most utilities as I have a PC I love and wont part with it, but my college has to use macs for stuff like pro tools. I don't expect to have much speed but just being able to use it for emergencies (and believe me last year to of had a mac emulator would of been a lifesaver)

The problem is I find they are all a bit naff, I understand you need a rom bios but I havn't a clue whats what. Plus I don't get what computer coresponds to a G3 for example

I have been mucking around trying to get softmac to work well however I'm not having too much luck. For example if I download something in a mac format I have no way of putting it into the "disk image" (a file that acts like a hard driver for softmac)

So whats the suggestions. Can I set up an emu on my PC and have it running a MAC OS 8 with at least 64-128mb ram (I have 256mb installed and will be upgrading to 512 soon)

What bios do I want to find?

How can I move files with ease between windows and mac

and why won't softmac let me create a hard drive, it only lets me create" disk drives. I was told you need to format the image files within softmac but my version of os 8 is missing the disk tools, is there a way around this?

I hope you can help as it will make this year at college a hell of lot easier than last year.

Pride:

Please, don't use SoftMac. I mean that. Use Basilisk II instead.

The site of that emulator is here:
http://gamma.nic.fi/~lpesonen/BasiliskII/

You can read about it here:
http://www.emaculation.com/basilisk.shtml

Don't use SoftMac

Anyhow:

You can't emulate a PPC. You can only emulate a 68K Macintosh computer (old).

"I understand you need a rom bios"

You will have to extract one of these from an existing 68K macintosh computer.

"For example if I download something in a mac format I have no way of putting it into the 'disk image.'"

Basilisk II will let you browse your Windows files from within the MacOS and drag them over.

" I was told you need to format the image files within softmac but my version of os 8 is missing the disk tools, is there a way around this?"

Forget SoftMac. Basilisk II does this from within a GUI program. Two mouse clicks.

These might help:

Please, don't use SoftMac.

Why are MAC users so stuffy and serious?

No one laughed (or flamed me) about the pizza box comment.
