...this 30gig drive is ATA100 the 20gig &
10gig are ATA66...the 20gig has 15gig's
of MP3's on it but the 10gig is a mirror of
the 30gig (O/S drive)

Can anyone tell me how the results stack up?...it seems that with the Drive Index numbers the ATA100 makes quite a diff...

Benchmarks: 30gig 20gig 10gig

Drive Index 21816 12934 14785
buffered read 446mb/s 490mb/s 510mb/s
sequential read 31mb/s 18mb/s 21mb/s

My opinion on this subject can be found in this SysOpt thread... but it's just my opinion. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

...well...I see on mine the buffered read/write is slower...but all other indicators are faster...and I'm running the 30gig right now and it DOES seem faster...so maybe it depends on how you use your system...mine is a caddy not a sports car...
...built for comfort not speed, runs fine but the power windows ect use gas...lol
...I don't do the 1/4 mile but on the GT circut I can cruze with the best...lol

Benchmarks don't mean squat if they are contradicted by "real world" results. If your happy with the performance, forget about what "ATA burst rate" you're getting. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

duh...it works good...and it's faster than the ATA66 drive...period
...also checked these drives with a mobo that is only ATA33...you could SEE the diff...
...ps...I have 3 drives..and it takes about 10-14 minutes to de-frag all 3...it took hours on the ATA33 mobo for just 30 gigs (2 drives)..the 30gig ATA100 takes less than 4 minutes now and it has 4.9 gigs of files on it...as far as I know that IS real world...lol...hey...want to buy a ATA33 MOBO???...REAL cheep!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Ata-66 vs Ata-33

July 1999....

I tested them with Sandra 2001...perhaps a newer program can better test a newer interface???...then there's the good old "acid" test...it does seem faster!!...
...anybody want to post some results for me to compare with???...if you want to use a different benchmark program give me a link and we'll compare...ok???

I liked the article because he came to the same conclusion I experienced when using a 66 vs a 33 drive....no big change. The conclusion he made about drive quickness makes sense, in the fact they are hampered by physical limitations not electronic. For me, the fastest drive in this house is a UDMA/33 WD. I use a 66 on this box and see no big change....I havent had experience with a 100 so I cant speak for those.

...ok...think it depends on a lot of things...right now I have all 3 drives on the Promise ATA100 card even though 2 are ATA66..
...someday I'll bench them through IDE1 on the Mobo (ATA66) & again as 1,2 & 3 on the promise card...I'm still not 100% sure that my peformance gain isn't due to the % of drive used...I also may re-set this drive for ATA33 & 66 just to see ...time will tell...
...thanks for the input but I still would like to see how they stack up with some of the "hot rods" that are out there...how well do your drive(s) do in Sandra 2001???

I am running two computers, one is a Athlon Classic 700, 128Mb RAM with Seagate 7200RPM 20Gb Hard Drive UATA/66, the other is a Duron 800, 384Mb RAM with WD 7200RPM ATA/66 20Gb Hard Drive. I can notice a huge difference in performance between the two drives, the WD coming a lot faster. I also tweaked both computers, the Duron 800 running NT4 and after reading an Arstechnica article on tweaking NT 4.0, the WD drive skyrocketed in hard drive performance. I'll give you the numbers soon, but for those who are interested on tweaking their NT4, here's the link.. http://arstechnica.com/tweak/nt/index.html

BTW, anyone use the ZD Winbench 99 test for Hard Disk benchmarking?? What scores do you get with your config? Before tweaking, on the Business Disk Winmark I got around 7000 after tweaking I got an amazing 11100, and in the High End Disk Winmark, before tweaking I got around 19000, after tweaking I got a massive 27300! I tried to benchmark in Sandra, but it noticed only little difference, I only got an extra 4000-5000 Marks.

ATA/100 - Real Performance or Marketing Hype?- Jan 17, 2001 (http://www.realworldtech.com/page.cfm?ArticleID=RWT011701000000)

"The actual real-world performance difference between ATA/33, 66 and 100 is usually quite small. There are no ATA/100 drive mechanisms available today that can use the entire 66MBps of ATA/66, and few that ever use up all of ATA/33's bandwidth. Only the drive's cache can make use of the added bandwidth, which yields some but not a lot of performance improvement." - Sharky's Extreme.com - Hard Drive Guide (http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/guides/hard_drive_guide/2.shtml)

My WD 8.4GB/2MB cache in UDMA/33 on a PC-Chips/K6-2/450 running Win98SE.
Measures close to 12,000 in Sandra.
You'll have to copy and paste the link. http://www.geocities.com/pw5599/wd.jpg

My Fujitsu 8.4GB/512K cache in my DFI/K6-3+/600 in UDMA/66 running Win2kPro measures about 8700 in Sandra.
