I am interested in knowing how much you pay monthly/yearly for internet access. Please list your connection speed and cost.
Me: 56k dialup $15/month

Cable service here in Mass mediaone.net, if you purchase your own modem it's $29.95/mth. I will never go back, 100 million byte downloads in 10 minutes. That on 56K took 1 whole day if I was lucky, using getitright.

No monthly subscrption fees, but £0.01/minute call charges (~1.4c/min).

Considering the connection is unreliable, unstable and slow..... Grrr!

I'd like to get 512k cable - cheaper than ADSL (Another Dodgy Signal Link) @ £30/month.

$9.95/mo for 15 hrs/mo. Plus 10 yen (about $.10) per three minutes dialup fee to the phone company. I could get 90 hrs/mo for $30, but if I used all of that, I'd pay about $180 in dial-up charges alone!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Free!

About 2yrs ago my dial up ISP sold out and they sent me an email requesting my account info. I emailed them back letting them know my account was due and asked where to send the payment? No reply. I called them a couple of weeks later and requested it again, still no reply, same thing the 3rd time, so I will wait on them to contact me http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif .

I used to have a free account with Flashnet, albeit unintentionally. I closed my account because at the time I was getting two free at Swbell (worked there). Well one day I noticed my roommate logging in to Flashnet (we shared accounts back then). Long story short, Flashnet had cancelled my billing but had left open my account and email. I called them, but try as they might, there engineers could not shut down my account, so we had free internet access for several months (I still did not use them because they sucked). I tried once again a few months ago and it looks like they finally got it right because my old password does not work anymore.

Cable w/AT&T@home. Works great except about once a month something happens and I have to run WINIPCFG to release and renew the connection. On a web bandwidth test, I'm usually at or above T1. Not bad for 39.99 a month.

Running Road Runner from Cox. $39.99 mo + $15 mo modem rental. 2 reasons why I don't just buy it, 1 it could **** out and 2 I just don't have $250 to spend for one. Of course renting does have advantages, if it goes out, the cable company replaces it for free.

I got DSL about a month ago, $40 a month, they supply the modem. It runs about 700-900K upload and download. I've gotten download speeds as high as 150K per sec. I'm in west central Indiana, very rural area. I'm with tctc.com. I hope I NEVER see 56K again! I run 2 machines on a network with ICS through this DSL.

I think I must live in the technology armpit of the world. (WI) I am desperately waiting for DSL to hit my city. Calling my local telco company goes like this.

Me: "Hi, I was wondering when you were going to start offering DSL"

Sales Rep: "We're doing the provisioning. Should be soon."

Couple months later..........

Me: "Hi, I would like an update on DSL in (My City).
Sales Rep: "We don't offer it there."
Me: "Ummmmmmm, I know, The last person said you were working on it."
Sales Rep: "I don't know. Maybe Repair Does"

Transferred to the repair Dept.

Me: Hi, BLAH BLAH BLAH
Repair Guy: Well, I think my supervisor was just in a meeting about that. Can I have him call you?.

That was a month ago. The cities around us have it. Just not here. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I just keep calling. Eventually they'll probably just start hanging up on me. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I just signed up for Comcast 2 way cable last weekend ($33 because I bought a modem($100)). Before this was using ExpressNet one way cable (telco return) for $20; with Netzero backup. Before that was using Winfire dial up for free (1 year)while awaiting DSL which never came because they went under.

Before that used WebCombo for 2 years for a one time charge of $125 until they went bankrupt.

$39.95 Per month Road Runner cable hook up. $34.00 Per year, yes per year, Juno back-up, dial-up connection. Haven't had to use it. Cable connection-can't beat it!~ The best price I ever got from aol was 9.95 per month, but for 34 bucks a year for a dial-up for "just in case" I figured it was worth it.

I had MSN when it first came out. They had the worst billing problems. I cancelled my account after a month and then got a 256.00 charge on my credit card. I called and got it reversed but left the dun connection. About a month later tried it and it worked. It worked for 2 years before the turned it off and I never got a bill...

With that would happen again..

$29.95 a month for adequate cable speeds. The download is OK - maxes out around 100KB/sec. Uploads seem to be limited to 15KB/sec. However, since I've had it (been several months now) the cable signal has only outright died twice, and was fixed within an hour or two of calling in to report the problem.

There's no cable available here yet. I could get 56k for about $20.00 amonth but I settle for 33,600k at $10.00 a month. I guess that seems like the dark ages to cable users.
Actually I get mine free now because I volunteer my services to help set up new users accounts.

I have Pacbell ADSL service. 1.5megabits down/128k up. It costs $49.99 a month. It's better than Cable because with Cable you basically share your bandwidth with those around you. So if you live in a big metropolis city, your download speeds will decrease quickly during peak hours.

RayH

I once paid for service about three years ago for about sixty days. I had to sign up for pay service, as my dialup freebie, has just changed TOS.

I still haven't been billed yet. I'm in a 90 day trial offer. It'll be $9.95 for 56K thereafter.

The only home broadband game in this town is Pac Bell DSL for $49.95/mo. I don't do $49.95 surfing. If I was in MA, I'd pop for a modem and a $29.95//mo cable, like my daughter!

I haven't had a 28.8/56k modem in the house since the early 90's. We were ISDN beta testers for roughly two years, then we tested DSL, now were actually out of the testing and using a next generation DSL called Etherloop. We live 2.1mi from our CO building, even at that speed this box is always sync'd up at 4Mb down/3.33Mb Up. Here is an extert from searches I found on Google.

Created by Nortel spin-off Elastic Networks, EtherLoop (a.k.a next generation DSL) is Ethernet over standard twisted pair (POTS ) technology that allows for simultaneous voice and high-speed data communications. Speeds range from 125 Kbps to 6 Mbps over distances of up to 21,000 feet.
Similar to Ethernet, Etherloop transmits data packets in bursts. Between bursts, EtherLoop looks for problems and interference in the lines and knows to steer clear and find an alternate path. Also, EtherLoop is Ethernet compliant, so it is easily adaptable to existing Ethernet systems.
EtherLoop also borrows from the best of DSL to offer point-to-point security and a non-shared medium (more users don't slow down connection speed), But unlike DSL, EtherLoop avoids impacting other services such as ISDN, T-1, ADSL, HDSL and SDSL, which are in the same cable binder group.
EtherLoop is not proprietary. Elastic Networks plans on licensing the technology to manufacturers who can design and create their own EtherLoop solutions.

Currently, EtherLoop provides up to 4-Mbps adaptive throughput in both directions at distances up to 21,000 feet. Elastic Networks plans to offer speeds of 6-Mbps in the third or fourth quarter of this year and 10-Mbps sometime in 2001.
