Hi,

I have got a Seagate Barracuda IV 40 Gb 7200 rpm.
At some times when I boot my computer it gets detected as another drive QT140016A 1.19 (which it shouldn't)
and should be detected as ST340016A 3.19

And when this happens and when I boot to windows, some of my windows files get corrupted and then I can't boot to windows anymore.

Why is this happening? Is it a power issue?

I had my computer running ok and then this problem hit and windows was corrupted and I lost all my data which I didn't backup.

Does anyone else with this drive have this problem?

Thanks,

Alex.

Do you also have this other drive in your system? Cos if u dont i dont know where it gets that number from cos the name strings come from the drives themselves.

It sounds like either yr jumper settings are wrong or you have a faulty IDE cable.

If the cable has two drives attached and it is faulty or the jumpers are wrong it is posiible that some of the read/write commands go to the wrong drive causing the file corruption your experiancing!

I have a freind who suffered from this exact same problem and it turned out to be a faulty cable.

___> edit.. i noticed just now whats happening!! THe name string is coming from your drive but some of the bits are corupted causing the wrong ascci values..

The S (ascii decimal 83) becomes the Q (ascii decimal 81) , the 3 (ascii decimal 51) becoms the 1 (ascii decimal 49) etc.. data bit 1 in the cable (representing the value 2) is probably shorted low or not connecting at all causing this corruption. Worse still one of the tiny resistors on either the hdd or the motherboard maybe damaged or knocked completly off.

The T (84), 4 (52), 0 (48), 1 (49), 6 (54), and the A (65) all have bit one low anyway so are not effected by this fault.

So what can I do to fix this problem?

Change the HDD Cable? or get a new motherboard?

I would start by trying an alternative cable

firstly try the hard disk in another pc with their ide cable. if it shows the same as yours get the drive replaced. if it doesnt. Then check things on your pc. like ide cable, or a bios update. if none of these work then contact the motherboard manufactorer and get a replacement

I have tryied puting it on my brothers computer (Gigabyte Motherboard) as both master and slave and his motherboard doesn't detect the hard drive at all. That is very weird. It has the lastest bios update.

I have changed the IDE cable and so far it has detected the drive perfectly, I will have to wait about 1 week until I can make sure that it works good.

I have the lastest Bios update. Motherboard is SOLTEK SL-75DR5.

if i was you i would sent the hard disk back. Although it now works ok the fact that it didnt detect on the other pc and with the earlier problem may lead to somthing in the future.

if it hasnt got any warrenty then thumbs up it works. But if it is i would send it back just to be safe.

Alex, is your motherboard using the newer 40-pin, 80-wire IDE cable the one with the blue end, if it is try setting the HD to cable select and connect it to the black end of the cable. Good Luck:)
