Looking for a long lost friend.....where to begin!?!?

I'm looking for a long lost friend who I haven't talked to in 10 yrs! Can anyone give me some tips on finding someone. Has anyone used classmates.com or any related websites & successfully found a long lost friend/lover/family member? I am only going on a first & last name. I don't know what school she went to.

look up the home town.

look up the last name and see if you remember her parent's name
