Cpl_Squirrel 01-07-2003, 01:56 PM Quite phallic, if nothing else. :x Johnny Fist 01-07-2003, 04:16 PM I don't know whats so cool about it. It looks pretty boring to me. bushmaster 01-07-2003, 04:32 PM Me thinks anything Linux is cool. P.S. I downloaded EvilEntity Linux last night and I'm setting up a PIII box to install it on today. I'm even going to load 98se on one partition and see if EE Linux blows out the windows partition as promised. mousepotato2 01-07-2003, 06:57 PM ...whatever.....that's one of many pics that were GENERATED inside this computer...totaly unreal... ...and yes, linux IS cool...as to squarell's (lol) remark....ya only think that way if that's what you're looking for!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Giblet Plus! 01-07-2003, 11:45 PM I dunno, what real other purpose do those "towers" serve? BahamutFFL 01-07-2003, 11:48 PM theres nothing cool about mandrake with stock KDE and all the help files and advertisements still there. bushmaster 01-08-2003, 12:23 AM C'mon. Da guy got mandrake up n runnin on his box. He's a happy camper, why burst the bubbles of acheivement ?. When he finds they are just repetitive icons he'll dump them. Hell, only one's up on mine are trash, mozeela, gaim, and evolution. Oh and I put a shortcut to kill on my taskbar. :D Cpl_Squirrel 01-08-2003, 02:12 AM ...and when the dust settles hopefully he'll dump the phallic wallpaper. ;) :p  Cpl_Squirrel 01-08-2003, 02:18 AM ...you know, that wallpaper actually reminds me of Tribes2. *** Cpl_Squirrel puts a little spin into mousepotato2. Cpl_Squirrel: Woohoo! mousepotato2: Shazbot! causticVapor 01-08-2003, 10:41 AM Originally posted by Giblet Plus! I dunno, what real other purpose do those "towers" serve? Methinks they're mesas. 3d art is often too abstract to have "purpose." As for the linux install, congrats.... hehe, "removable media" icon, the first clue. Had mandrake installed for a while. Bigjakkstaffa 01-08-2003, 10:54 AM theres nothing cool about mandrake with stock KDE and all the help files and advertisements still there. One word: GNOME ..KDE sucketh IMO --Jakk:t Cpl_Squirrel 01-08-2003, 02:42 PM Originally posted by Bigjakkstaffa One word: GNOME ..KDE sucketh IMO --Jakk:t Yeah, I've always liked gnome better too. ;) Bigjakkstaffa 01-08-2003, 02:48 PM Shame veryone seems to be directing their attentions at KDE and putting GNOME in as an afterthought, at least so it seems :( --Jakk:t Cpl_Squirrel 01-08-2003, 02:51 PM I think it's much less that they're putting their attentions there than their distros are dumping them there by default. :p Giblet Plus! 01-08-2003, 10:49 PM Originally posted by causticVapor Had mandrake installed for a while. Same here. Installing mandrake shouldn't count as an achievment. It took me less time than a windows install, and it was easier. :D gjimene2 01-08-2003, 11:02 PM I agree, but **** took me ten mins to get my time zone right, HAHAHAHA j.m@talk 01-09-2003, 08:02 AM Originally posted by gjimene2 I agree, but **** took me ten mins to get my time zone right, HAHAHAHA Conformation that you don't really know what day it is ;) :D :D :D :D NJEnviroguy 01-09-2003, 08:25 AM In theory it could take 10 minutes. Too much freedom is a bad thing. I think almost every thing I had to config I had to input wierd values...most of them didn't pan out well. BahamutFFL 01-09-2003, 11:38 AM Mandrake=lame. I like SuSE, redhat, and slackware. I currently run redhat just because I like the redhat network update thing, the packages it comes with, bluecurve theme is prettier looking then kde, and it has the best support. mousepotato2 01-11-2003, 08:13 AM ..wish I had more time to play....I'll get more creative as time goes by,...after all I've only invested about 4 hours on Linux total (including install on 2 computers ...when my house is done I hope to have more than a few minutes a day to learn this WONDERFULL OS)....here's a pic of Gnome desktop...constructive suggestions ARE welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cpl_Squirrel 01-11-2003, 09:06 AM That is just plain infinitely better. mousepotato2 01-11-2003, 08:57 PM thanks Cpl_Squirrel...just wanted you to know the first one was a pic I made (3-D actualy) and no one but my friends have it...also, that was a first-run install so I made everything I could show so I could start to learn my way around a new (to me) world of software commands, I have a LONG way to go yet....I'm more adept at hardware and can do a lot with it & since I've only delt with flavorss of windows I've learned to dial in hardware/GUI/ & config windows pretty well...I had a P75 w/ 12meg ram & a 1.2gig HD given to me 4 years ago....didn't even know how to start up/ shut down it at the time...I now have a XP1600 cpu (running@1622mhz@113F w/o unlocking - FSB only) w/ Asus kt7 mobo w/ 768 SDRAM and 4 HD's, burner, cdrom, promise IDE card and room for 3 more IDE devices set for multi boot with a choice for any HD I want...one 40Gig HD with 8,400+ (32+Gigs) of MP3's. ...total of 120 gigs HD...5 speaker souround sound & custom case mod with a 4" fan blowing directly on the CPU/mobo...etc...etc...(designed myself from the ground up.....self taught) ...bottom line is I had to learn windows and am just barely starting to learn Linux so I was jazzed to get whatI got so far and had to tell someone!! ...any helpfull suggestions are welcome!!!!!!!!! ...I've never had a computer class so all the advice helps a lot!!!!!!!!! ...I just wanted to thank everyone and ask for any input that you all think will help me!!!!!!! ...someone said there's ways to trim down linux for better performance.....let me know your thoughts!!!!!! Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!! Cpl_Squirrel 01-12-2003, 05:26 AM Originally posted by mousepotato2 thanks Cpl_Squirrel...just wanted you to know the first one was a pic I made (3-D actualy) Hehe, I was just having fun with the 'phallic' comment. I like the pic. Massive protrusions and all. :D I think that one guy was being critical just 'cause everything besides the wallpaper was default. When you show a screenshot of your cool desktop, people are expecting to see some kind of unusual tweaks to the environment. As for you learning the software, keep it up, and hell, use all the icons you need until you feel they are getting in the way (it will happen, hehe). I recommend a good Linux book if you want a solid foundation for your journey with the Penguin. Linux is massively different from say, Windows 98. some links for you to check out: http://www.cmm.uklinux.net/steve/ntt.html www.linuxnewbie.org <--some nice help articles, and a forum http://rute.2038bug.com/rute.html.gz <--big fat free online book Oh yeah, as for speed tweaks? -like windows, kill all background services that don't need to be running -"hdparm" can enable DMA among other HD tweaks :t mousepotato2 01-12-2003, 06:22 PM ...yes...that's the kind of things I need to learn...I have windows pretty well figured out but as you say Linux is a WHOLE different animal....even stock it's faster than my tweeked windows systems though. Can you tell me what a good book to start with would be???...not the "dummies" versions but something that would teach me the core commands and give me insight to the basics of the OS??? ...also very high on my list is to firewall the OS in such a way that I don't need to worry someone would be able to hack me untill I get better with it....it's kind of like learning spanish without someone bi-lingual to help...lol love it so far!!!!!!! ....just have to get everything that my wife uses on it so she'll be happy with it too....may stay with multi-boot just for her!!!!
