I presume SCO Unix, version 4.2 ????? System V is very generic. There are many different "flavours" of Unix, which are System V.

You can no longer buy SCO (now Caldera) 4.2. The current version is OpenServer 5.6. Any of the 5.x versions should be backwards compatible with 4.2. If you must have this particular version, your only option is to get it from someone who has it.

Thanks for the reply.Let me explain. I have a very old Teach yourself unix third ed book and wanted to use the same version in the book to learn with. I dont know anything about unix so i wasnt sure how similar each flavor is. I did however just buy the Sams teach yourself unix in 24 hours book. Is there any way i can get a version of Unix that will be close to the CLI? I find in the Newer books?

Will telnet work? Im not looking to go Mandrake or any GUI, im more interested in learning the Command Line params....Thanks

All Linux distros have a command line interface. You don't have to use the GUI. You can use it in "bare bones" command mode, if you want to.

Just about any sysV command, will work on Linux (any flavour). I've been using Unix for 12+ years, and am very comfortable with Linux. My preference is Mandrake with the Korn shell. If you want a "pure Unix" to start with, there are Sun (Solaris) and SCO (OpenServer) versions freely available for non-commercial use, on the Intel platform.

You know what would be really nice, a unix emulater that could sit on windows...I know there is a Lnx4Win, but talking about something a little smaller and more simple..Boy i want a lot dont i...any ways, thanks

There is an emulator... it's a full PC emulated with software: http://www.vmware.com

It MUST run under NT4 or 2000 and does not run under 9X.

You can run (AFAIK) any guest operating system, but being a PC emulator, don't expect to run anything too heavy on it. I run virtual Win98 (for two useful legacy apps) under 2000 and it 'feels' like running windows on a 486-100.... on a 933MHz host machine!

If you d/l Solaris, you get the .iso images and I'm not sure if there's a way of extracting the actual files from the .iso image file - unless you can do that (somehow) or borrow a burner to create the CDs, I'm not sure if those files will be of any use to you.

thanks for the info. However, i already own VMware 2.0. There is are several major bugs right now between my VIA SouthBridge 686b Chipset and Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. Ive tried to install Linux 6.2( the only ver i have on CD )and it kept getting coruppted. Im now running WinME ( which sucks )and am looking for a unix command line utility or emulater of some sort, to learn the interface. Im currently downloading Mandrake 8.0, but its taking forever. In 1 7 hour session, while i sleep i only get about 128MB's.
