Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : DVD Rom and CDRW MASTER or SLAVE
I just got a cendyn CDRW that says to set it to master. The manuals all say that the master should be at the end of the IDE cable and the slave in the middle. This configuration does not work. I found that my CDRW must be in the middle of the cable and set to master.
I guess what I'm asking is whether or not this is OK as far as data transfer is concerned.
Thanks,
cank
It happens sometimes with certain models of the drives
And I believe configuration you've decscribed earlier is "Cable Select/CS" ...

I've run the screwiest cable combinations running one or more HDDs and/or cd drives or burners, and some manufacturers like the CS setting for some - whatever works......
there might be a slowdown in data transfer depending on what you're doing, but you probably wouldn't even notice anyways

All my CD-RWs have always said to set them as the master, however I have found they work just fine as a slave with no niticable difference. I have a Sony 16x DVD-ROM set to master (E drive) and my Sony 48x24x48 set as the slave. The cable gets hooked up properly and I have never had one problem with that setup or any other CD-ROM/CD-RW combo. Think about it htis way, if they MUST be set to master to work properly, then why do they have a jumper on them that gives you the option?

ND's right, what your manual described is "Cable Select". If both drives are set to CS, then the one on the end will be the master, and the one in the middle the slave.
