I have 99 files in my Windows directory (Win98) that are called simemory.$01 to simemory.$99. They take up 50MB of space. What are they? I cannot find anything on Google about them.
Thanks
Dave

Thanks Dave SoopaStar 04-19-2001, 08:18 PM right click on the files and see if they have version information. sounds like somekind of a temp file to me. Paul daveleau 04-20-2001, 04:47 AM No info in the file properties. Very strange. just says it is a .$00 file. shady 04-20-2001, 02:02 PM hey maybe it's a trojan with the same name "simemory.exe" and it generates those files to trick you into thinking that it is a legit program....ahhh prob. not.....maybe you should get some anti-spy, trojan remover software? Long Haired Hippie Phreek 04-20-2001, 05:56 PM Get pc-cillin, the latest bersion, or do the webscan on their website. Then delete the files. See if they come back. If they do, something is creating them (duh). Check your startup folder in the start menu, see if anything in there might be connected. Then actualy open the startup folder, make sure that there are no hiden links in there. Next, we go into regedit. Click start>run and type in "regedit" and hit enter. Go into hkey_local_machine>software>microsoft>windows>curr entversion>run. In there are more auto start-up apps. See if any of them might be responsible (most trojans, and many virii like to hide in here). That should take care of it. Also, be very carefull not to delete anything important in registry editor, as it does it instantly. scotter 04-20-2001, 10:23 PM if memory serves me right those are coused by a virus I remember reading somthing about it a while back daveleau 04-23-2001, 05:22 AM Thanks guys. I am not infected now but someone did infect my system while I was away from it with the hybris32@MM virus (snow white and the seven dwarves), so it could be from that I guess. I have not run a trojan scanner on it. Just the McAfee that the university has placed on all our systems and you know how bad it is... Thanks Dave SysOpt.com
