Hello everyone, I'm not sure there is anything that can be done on my part to fix the trouble I am having but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I am on a DSL conection through Aliant Communications. If I try to share files with my family in the US on Comcast cable I we get messages saying that there is a firewall preventing the transfer. (Have tried through mirc and MSN messenger).

Neither of us has firewall software in place, and I believe the problem is on my end. If anyone attemts to ping my IP there is no response.

Also I was at https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and when I tried the Test my Sheilds and Probe My Ports, it says that "There is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that a port (or even any computer) exists at this IP address!"

Is there anything that I can do on my end to fix this? Will my ISP be able to do anything for me? The fact that it might be harder for hackers to get to me is great, but I need to transfer some files and this is a pain in the but.

Looks like you may have some free space on one of your ISP's servers:

How about uploading the files there and then sending the URL(s) to whomever?

Unfortunatly, that free space is only 5 megs and I am looking to transfer some larger files.

Looks like you can store up to 6MB on your account. Here's a link to the Google search I used:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=site%3Aameritech.net+%22personal+web+space%22

The "Ameritech.net Terms and Conditions", located here:

http://www.ameritech.net/visitors/general/terms.htm

states "There is a 6 MB limit on the amount of personal web space you may use.".

Wandered around a bit and somehow ended up on this page:

http://www.ameritech.net/pubsys/help/helptemp.html

This one states "(The Web page URL of an Ameritech.net member takes the form: http://www.ameritech.net/users/Member_ID/filename.html.)". So I tried the url:

http://www.ameritech.net/users/jrobbinson

(simply used the username you use here on SysOpt.com) and it looks like your website is waiting for you to take up occupancy.

You may want to start here:

Are you running any kind of firewall? Maybe ZoneAlarm. When I went to the same site with ZoneAlarm enabled it told me there were no ports either. If you do have a firewall you can disable it, although I would not recommend it, rather I think they will allow you to set up an ip address that it will let through.

One other option is to have you and family join a peer to peer network and let your family know the file name. You can give it a weird name that only your family would search for so that noone else will get it.

One other option is that if you are able to run Internet Information Server you could set up your own site, files and info.

Hope this was of some help.

Thanks for the help guys. I figured I should give you an update on the solution.

After talking to my ISP they tell me that the problem is that they are using "Internet-sharing software or hardware, a system also known as ICS/NAT." (They give me a 10.xx.xx.xx address which is then changed into a "real world" ip address) After some complaining (and explaning a few things to the tech) they are switching me over to their new high speed system which does not use ICS/NAT. (They now give me the "real world" ip address right off the bat instead of the 10.xx.xx.xx.
