I would like to boost up my HP AMD K6-2 450mhz cpu. I see there are a few adapters available, however I do not fully understand when and where they are usable? as far as I know I can go to a AMD K6-2 550 cpu. any suggestions?
The adapter is only needed if your motherboard doesn't support the voltage and multipliers of the K6-2 series of CPUs. However, since you already have a K6-2 450, the 550 should just be a drop in replacement. You just need to change the multiplier to 5.5 and you might need to change the voltage to either 2.2 or 2.4V, depending on what is listed on the chip.

DanU,
How do I change the multiplier and voltage?

depends on what type of mb you have. some have jumpers and some are all done thru the bios. read up on your mb manual and it will tell you.

To be honest i've tried the 450 at 500, 550 etc, this chip in my experience doesn't really hold to well at anything over 50mhz increase, even with good cooling and varied voltage settings. It may just be me but my system freezed i had blue screens of death every where.
Also there won't be much of a performance increase due to the lack of L2 cache...what does anyone else think?
My K6-II 450 runs nicely @525 (5.5 x 95). Altough I had to boost the voltage to 2.7. After 1.5 hours of intence ColinMcRae2.0 the cpu temp is at 40'c. So I don't see it as any problem at all.
It did run @550, but I like the stability more than the little 25 mhz boost. To lower the FSB to 95 from the original 100 didn't bring any significant prob's either. I just wish I had a mobo that would go over 100 Mhz FSB...
One thing, be sure to ave good cooling, triple-check everything with it ! I also took out the metal plate on top of cpu, just to find out that it actually didn't evev touch the core...
Well, Tepo's $0.02... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I have the 450 K6-2 @ 558 and had no problems overclocking. I changed the front side bus to 124 in the bios, kept the multiplier at 4.5, and changed the voltage higher, till it was stable at 2.5. System has been running much smoother during games. Hopefully that helps.
