Took on playing with an old 486 HP VL66 series and got interested in applyingsome 3.1 games for an elderly friend. Found out just how user friendly newer OS's are.
questions:
1. where can I download a win3.1 OS at?
2. when trying to format a floppy, it says:
checkign existing disk format...
disk not ready, format another?
it did this on several floppies
3. where can I go online to learn alot about win3.1 and earlier
DOS commands
4. where can I find what version of DOS is on there
these are old kindergarten issues I know but I can use the help.
any related win3.1 or dos sites woud be appreciated

You can't download Win 3.11 legally or any of the older DOS versions either.
To find out what version DOS is loaded, at the DOS prompt type "ver" and press enter (without the quotes).
There are many good DOS boos still around and in libraries. I have stacks of them.
Your problem with the floppy disk tells me there is a cable or jumper issue or a BIOS setting that needs to be changed.

I believe I still have the original MS installation 3.5" diskettes for Win3.1. Although these have always been stored within a 3.5" diskette cardboard box, at room temp, out of light and unexposed to any type of magnetic or radiation fields, I cannot vouch 100% that they are intact.
I'm almost certain I no longer have a (paper) license, but I am (was?) the original owner. I'm not sure MS would even care anymore, but if you think you are interested let me know via PM and I'm sure we can work out something reasonable.
You could always contact MS regarding a change of license owner (I've done this with other people who have bought software and Os'es from me), but they (MS) may not even be interested in maintaining license records on a Win3.1 product.

PS: these was a built-in MS-DOS (command line) help file built into Win3.1.
