I installed it, and it messed up dvd playback. I had to go back to 8.1 :(

Everything ran great for me, when I installed DX9.

I personally think DVD playback is even better.
(I use WinDVD )

I tried windvd and powerdvd, and it didn't work for me. I'm not saying that it messes up dvd playback for everyone, but it did for me.

When one reads about it at the MS site the details are quite vague. Personally I would like to know what type of hardware is in mind when it's written, and what type of hardware is it actually tested on during its trials at MS prior to it's release.
I'm running it right now on XP pro and I've played alien v pred 2 and all seems well. No sound or vid problems as of yet.

Nope, it didn't. I have winME, not XP, so my problems are probably rare.

I went back to 8.1, and it works fine now. :)

not a big fan of dx.
i had dx 7, ran perfectly, identified everything, hardware/software.
switched to dx 8, boom, my comp is fried. half of my drivers and components are unrecognized and arent supported by "microsoft"
so i must "replace it with a default microsoft driver" ok...no.
i'll just roll back to dx 7 thanks.

I only have one beta file in 9.0.

mfc42.dll retail beta

if you check your dx 8.1 files you will have the same beta file..

Yeah, I saw that mfc42.dll Beta Retail.

I once made the mistake of installing DX 8.0a on top of DX 8.0 when there was a 8.0a update for users of DX 8.0. It was a fresh install, so I didn't bother fixing it and instead reinstalled completely.
