I'm looking for a program that will burn binary data directly off a CD--what's a good choice?

CDRWin is the only program that will burn bin's. (Is that what you are asking about...bin files?).

Nero will burn a .bin file just fine.
Open Nero, go to File\burn image
Change file type setting to "all files". Browse to, and select the .bin file. On the next box that pops up, "foriegn image settings", change the block size to "2352".
Click OK and burn away.
This works almost all the time, if by chance Nero gives a warning before the burn, cancel the burn and open up the .que file in notepad. Look for the settings for mode and block size and set these accordingly in the foriegn image setting box in Nero.
Dave

BTW- Nero really isn't free, the demo is time limited.

CDRWin isnt the only burner to burn .bin's
there is also FireBurner, Nero as mentioned. I like CDRWin myself though http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Ya'll will have to forgive me for this--I don't use a burner much.

When you say select the BIN file, would that file be on the CD I'm trying to burn or somewhere ont he hard drive?

Also, if I burn a BIN image to a CD-ROM, will it still be readable for data?

If someone could write this walkthrough-newbie style-I'd be very appreciative. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Normally the bin file would be on your hard drive, If it's already on another CD you could burn the file from your CD-Rom onto your CD-R if your burner is real fast or "burn-proof".

A bin file or ISO is a CD that has been converted into binary data. In that form it is not usable to you or your system. Using the option to "burn image" takes that binary data and converts it back to it's original form during the burn.

Think of the bin file as just a whole mess of ones and zeros, and when you properly burn it onto a CD, that raw data turns back into files, folders, or a program.

You may want to try this:
It sounds like you have the bin file on a CD. Copy it onto your hard drive somewere then use the above steps to burn it back onto an empty CD-R. When your done, look at your new CD and it should be a "normal" CD.

How do I take the data off the CD and convert it to a BIN?

I'm looking for a good freeware data backup program so I can restore my HD in the event of a system crash. Any suggestions? I have a Plextor 16/12/40A, but not the SCSI version, which includes a HD backup utility.

I'm not familiar with Nero, but CDR Win creates .bin files (and .cue files). EDIT: the 'cue' file, I think, is exactly that... a 'cue sheet' for the program.

The bin file is the CD image and is created on the hard drive when you use the 'extract disk/tracks/sectors' option. Nero may have an option of 'create CD image' or record CD to hard drive' - something similar.

If your burner is reasonably recent, you chould be able to use RW disks. You can go through the entire process of recording the image and copying a 'disk at once' to the re-writable, just as you would a write once... but if is screws up, you only lose time and gain experience, rather than gaining another coaster as well! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

If you want to create a copy of a CD, I'd recommend recording to the hard drive first, as if you do direct ROM-to-burner, then you can get a 'buffer underrun' - knackered copy in English! if the CDROM has difficulty with the source disk.

BURN-Proof CD writers can overcome this by turning the laser on & off if the flow of data stops.

If you really get stuck with CDR Win, email me and I'll send you some screenshots of the various processes.

Do you really need a "BIN" or will any kind of binary image do?
Nero will make an image but it's going to be an .nrg image. Look under:
Help\help topics\image file
For instructions on creating one.

If you really want to end up with a "bin", then krusty is right, your going to need another burning program.

How good is CloneCD? Does it burn .bin & .cue files too?
