oops, the following was supposed to be an answer to a question...
I had a similar problen working with a Matrox video card. It turned out there was an incompatibly with the Diamond Multimedia sound card I had. Something to do with the S-3(?) chip. If you have a sound card with this chip let me know and I will dig deeper.
I put in a Sound Blaster and all was well.
