:t Hi all and thank you for reading my post. I've been coming here for over a year now and this is the best forum by far on the internet. I don't post much cause even tho I'm a tech myself you guys come up with some creative answers. :p So now on to my problem. My windows 2000 seemed to crash suddenly yesterday and all I could do was reinstall...Which worked fine. Now for the fun part. I use Verizon DSL with a westel modem connected via ethernet. It worked fine before but now in the new install I get the following error {error 769 The specified destination is not reachable.} Now I know it's not the computer hardware...or is it. When I first set it up I hooked the modem up via USB and everything worked fine I then put in the NIC and the transition was perfect and flawless. I guess what I'm wondering is does that make a difference...Should I try to hook it up via USB then switch to ethernet. I've read somewhere to uninstall tcp/ip and reinstall it but I'm not to keen on that Idea. So I'll list my system specs here in case that may help.....Any answers would be great...thanks guys

when do you get that error message?

when you try to copy a file to a network device or to a Removeable media?

The error occurs when trying to establish a vpn to verizon. They are not a "true" alwaya on connection ya see...they stink!! So i put in my name and pass and when the software trys to connect I get the error. It's as if my computer does not see the modem. I think I'm going to try hooking up the usb (like I did the first time, a few months ago) and after I get the computer to establish the connection switch to ethernet. What I find strange is When i put in 2000 the first time It went off without a hitch....Now I get this problem. What do you guys think....Reinstall the software with the usb or what!!! thanks for all the help

Sounds like a problem with the Ethernet nic - Check it and make sure it and the driver is working - ie connect it to another pc via crossover or a hub. Check the link light when its connected up to DSL - All the usual techy stuff.

Make sure the rate is set correctly - some dont autodetect (very few) so try and set manual speed and duplex but pretty sure its an ethernet issue - I used to get the same error until I replaced an intermittently faulty RTL chipset NIC although in your case because it was working before it may be a driver or configuration issue.

Use ethernet rather than USB for internet - Never really had many problems with USB but the concensus here is not to use it and the guys on here are pretty reliable and rigorous in their testing/experience.
