Ah yes, once you get it up and running and configured for your hardware it's a pleasure.

I've also got Mandrake 9 up and running as a dual boot with XP pro. I like the fact that a lot of programs came with it. I like that it was free. But I am dissappointed with how slow programs open compared to XP. In the time it takes to open a web browser, I can be on my third site already with IE6. It also doesn't support my digital camera, so I guess I'm going to have to learn to mount it as a usb storage device and see if I can use gphoto2 that way. It was very easy to install and configure, but starts up very slowly compared to XP. Pretty impressive so far, but some things are irritating, like shutting down, single click in XP, several clicks including logging off etc. in Mandrake.

Any of the major distros are probably not optimized for your needs/hardware out of the box. With Mandrake in particular, I'd be sure to trim off all of the excess 'services' that run on startup. Ask the Mandrake horde how to do it if you don't know how. :p

After that, I'd look into customizing a kernel for your cpu and with only the features you need. You can also tweak your hard drive with the command line program hdparm.

man hdparm

Happy tweaking.
