I removed the Adaptec CD burning software prior to removing my Philips 4x4x24 CD Burner. I then installed a Liteon 48x24x48 CD Burner. No problem on recognizing the new hardware. I then installed the NERO CD Burning software that came with the burner. At one p[oint in the installation, I was propmted to replaced certain files left behind by Adaptec and replace them with the files from Nero or writing to the new burner could be affected. I checked yes to replace the files. I was then asked to reboot. On rebooting, the computer was slow and finally displayed a windows protection error and told me to reboot, which I did and went into safemode. I selected line by line confirmation and entered yes for all lines. One line in particular said bad command or file name, htat being "share.exe /F:4096 / L:40". I entered yes for this one also and went on to complete the sequence and finally booted up. I also ran scanreg from a dos prompt from the startup disk and selected a registry that was good and rebooted. The computer started up normally. I have yet to try rebooting to see if the changes stick. What caused the protection error? Was it when I changed the files when prompted by the new software? Any help appreciated.

Might as well try it again now. You need to know.
CD Writer software is powerful medicine. It must be treated with care. That's just the way it is until more OSes like XP and OSX have native support.

I rebooted and got the same windows protection error. Had to go to safe mode in step by step confirmation...twice. Restored registry. Booted up to windows. Would it make any difference if I reinstalled the old CD burner and reinstalled the Adaptec software? I can't unistall the Nero software in Add/Remove programs...it isn't listed. There is no uninstall option on the installation CD. Is formatting and reinstalling the OS and the Nero software the only way to cure this problem?

Those are fatal in my experience. Looks like a fresh start for you. :(

In msconfig, in my autoexe.bat file there is the line "share.exe/F:4096/L:40" with the box checked. From what I have read and don't really understand is...does that have to be loaded on startup or can I REM it out? I do not remember if it has always been there or not. When I startup in safe mode with line by line confirmation and enter NO to that line, the computer boots to windows. I did reinstall Nero software then remove it. This time it was in the Add/Remove programs and appears to have uninstalled successfully. I reinstalled the old cd burner and reinstalled the adaptec software. It is working just like before. Just wanting to check with you before I do something I'll regret. As always, your input is appreciated.

that was the ollllld way of sharing files
and you don't need that anymore
now it can be set automatically after you choose a folder or file to share with

I removed that line in the autoexe.bat file. Haven't rebooted yet. While I still have access to a somewhat working computer. I did notice in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE...Software, there is still a folder for "ahead". This is the software I removed earlier when I uninstalled the Nero CR burner software. Since I reinstalled the original CD burner in this machine and the Adaptec software for it, would it be safe to delete this folder for the "ahead" software in the registry? If so, do I just right click and delete or is there some more accepted practice? Win 98se

Delete it.

Next time you might want to uninstal the software, shut down, pull the drive out, and then start up again. Once your system is running, shut down, instal the new drive, power up, then instal the software.

I REM'd the line in autoexec.bat and removed two folders in the registry referencing "ahead" software. Crossed my fingers and shut down. Started and it came up without a glitch. Thanks to all for you input and patience. It's fun to learn when you have knowledgeable teachers.

I am still having problems with the Windows Protection Error on startup, causing me to go into Safe Mode. I ran Dr. Watson and received the following information that I am not sure what to do with or how to do it.
Adobe Type Manager has altered Windows system files.
Module Name: ATMSYS.DRV
Description: Adobe Type Manager
Version: R v4.00-32S058G06NN
Product: Adobe Type Manager
Manyfacturer: Adobe Systems Inc.
---------------
<unknown> has altered Windows system files
Module name: <unknown>

If the Taskbar is behaving strangely, try exiting IMGICON
Module Name: IMGICON.EXE
Description : IMGICON
Version: 6,1,1,1
Product: Iomega Corp IMGICON 6.1p
Manufacturer: Iomega Corp
I am not having any problem with the taskbar behaving strangely.
In my config.sys there is this line checked:
@SET CLASSPATH=C\PROGRAM~1\PHOTOD~1.1\ADOBEC~1
If you have any idea what's up with this situation, please let me know. I am at a loss as to how to correct this problem without having to just start completely over with a reformatting.

Those are red herrings. You may have bad memory in that machine.
Have you tried simply reinstalling Windows over itself from a startup floppy? You should.

Thanks BipolarBill. I'll attempt that when I get a day off Friday. I'll post back the results then.

Well, I reinstalled Win98se and the windows protection errors ceased to be. Boots up every time without a glitch. Thanks for that bit of help. Now I REALLY need your help again. Once the reinstall was complete, my desk top and programs were not there. They can still be found in Windows Explorer, just not in Start, Programs. I have been successful in creating shortcuts for some, others I have had to reinstall. Some just don't want to cooperate. The bigggest problem I am having now is that Internet Explorer won't connect and MS Outlook Express is not working. Says I am missing certain .dll files. I am on Southwestern Bell DSL, networked to my wife's computer that has all the main software on it, modem, HomePortal networking hardware. I can't get that working on my computer or be recognized on the network. So my internet doesn't work, the IE browser is version 5.0(was 6.0) and Outlook Express won't launch. My DSL apapter to my computer is recognized but won't install the driver from the disc that I KNOW the driver is on. Any ideas on how to recover since this reinstall? This reinstall was done n a GW2000 P500 using the GW Restoration disk and the Win 98se disc when prompted. Installation went smooth, operating system works great, but all the stuff I had before just doesn't want to work right. Thanks.

I hate to say this, but you must format (erase) that hard drive to wipe out any possible viruses. Don't hold on for your programs - those can be reinstalled.
If there is a virus file left on that hard drive, you will never be done with it until you format.

Thanks, to all for your help. I had to format and reinstall Win98se. Everything is back to normal and running okay. Too many files got lost, corrupted or whatever when I did the first reinstall without formatting. The system runs smoother now and seems a bit peppier. Thanks again.
