benchmarking app

Is there a benchmarking application that will function in that will function in both windows and linux environments?

specifically, I'm looking for something that can run in WinXP, Red Hat 8.0, Mandrake 9.0, Slackware 8.1, and Lycoris.

Don't laugh, but you can try benchmarking with WinRAR. It's available for DOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X.
Archiving combines CPU, RAM and HD, so quite everything is here except videocard, maybe :)

excellent test

yup WinRAR-ing a 100 meg file will test any system overall quite good :D

If you're going with WinRAR, be sure to set the dictionary size in Compression options to 4MB, let it work even harder :)
