Okay guys,

In two months I'm purchasing a DVD Drive and a Video Card.

I've selected the DVD Drive already.

The problem is that I'm on a budget of $120. I don't want a super high-end card at all (meaning, no ATI Radeon 9700). I want a PCI video card with at least 64MB of Video Ram. That's all I ask, does any one have any suggestions. The DVD drive is about $40-50.

However if you have a really good offer somewhere, et me know so i can check it out. thanks guys:D

PowerColor Radeon 9000 PCI. As I've learned here at Sysopt, all ATi cards have DVD hardware decoding. It's also the only PCI card that fully supports DirectX 8.1 and OpenGL 1.3, and it has 64MB of DDR. $99 on Pricewatch.

Yup - if DVD's your priority go for the Ati

But make sure to get "BUILD BY ATI" cards

and not the "Powered by ATI" !!

big difference :t

I believe that PowerColor card is the only Radeon 9000 card in PCI format. ATi's website doesn't even mention Radeon 9000 in PCI versions, other than to say that they don't make them that way themselves but perhaps other builders do.

ATI DVD is only supported in the AGP bus, not on the PCI, so then what he wants wont work at all

is best to get the Creative Drx3 combo with the creative DVD drive

Ummmm.. What about the Rage Pro PCI, and Rage 128 PCI, and what about the Radeon VE PCI, (and you get the point) they all have that nice piece of work the Rage Theatre chip on them, which is their core to beaughtiful TV out and DVD acceleration.
The only newer ATI's that may not have DVD acceleration are maybe the OEM or 3rd party cards.. :t

well i bought the drive and i love it...the vid card, I will wait to see.

I presently have some built-on card with 32 MB which is pretty decent.

I think AllGamer is wrong on this one(about the PCI cards not supporting DVD) because I contacted ATI and they do.

I agree. PowerColor's website says the Radeon 9000 PCI does hardware DVD:

I'm going to a Super Computer Sale in a little while. Hope to find one!

Everyone has their day.

then again, he is human,

humans make mistakes...

an I think that ATI would know more about its product than the person who purchases it...

i just repeating what i got from ATI software when you try to install their DVD software in the PCI models, it wont allow you cuz it says you need AGP

so that's my point

technically yeah PCI should have no problem supporting DVD, but their own software, when you install it says that it requires AGP

lol :p :x

"The only newer ATI's that may not have DVD acceleration are maybe the OEM or 3rd party cards.."

Thats a big maybe as I have yet to see one 3rd party ati without the ati thatre chip. On the other hand I have a rage 128 16mb Built By ATI here (pci) with NO theatre chip on it. Go figure? Im sure all the newer ones have it though. Its one of ATI's selling points, best dvd playback (hardware) and tv out quality for the $. Thats all due to the ATI Theatre chip.:D

I've Never Had that Problem, With Any PCI ATI Card

The 128 has some basic hardware DVd acceleration integrated into the Rage128 chip.

OK I see. So the 128 has intergrated dvd features in the GPU . IE not full hardware playback or a ati theatre chip cause no tv out and such. Makes sense then.:t

7000? Why that and not this? Available at Newegg. Is it that fancy (sure it's got dual monitor and TV-Out)? Or pricey? I'm hoping to order it soon for my birthday. Get it before I do!

The 7000 has DVD acceleration, at least get the 7200, cause it at least has T&L, without T&L now days leaves you SOL for todays games (plus it improves framerates, and makes games look better) :t
