LOL, but I do hate them..... A simple thing but I was the third guy in the line so it took me two hours of work, and restarting, trying to remember how to get into the BIOS, etc to fix the damage they had done trying to configure @home cable connection. (wrong identification to start with) Somehow they didnt grasp the fact that TCP/IP was a required protocol for the NIC..........

Don't forget to bleach and boil those hands.

Compaqs aren't that bad. Uhm, yea right.

Whats even better is Compaq's authorized repair centers, my g/f took her laptop to a repair station after the display "quit", she was quoted 595$ for a mainboard excluding labor, being 2500 miles away from me I had her ship it to me since im in SoCal and had a local reputable repair shop telling me it could be repaired instead of replaced at a cheaper rate, the beep code wasnt making sense but seemed to be memory related, I reseated the added on mem chip and all was ok...cost---shipping 2 ways...

Gee, I wonder if a compaq will burn right. With enough gas it should. No, wait, the gas would be burning then.

Said it before I'll say it again best tool I ever used on my 5030 Presario was a 22oz hammer. Now for the real icky part I still use 3 parts from that PC http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif Shame on me but Ive got a Zip100 and I have the Keyboard and Mouse useing them now. Big red letters COMPAQ on both http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif

It's not that bad, at least its not an Emachine!

My next Comp I plan to build from scratch though.

Compac.... for me, that is the meaning of every time my friend up the street calls me with a computer question. Everything about that miserable POS has been pure hell. First, we tried to OC his Athlon... used all the right stuff, and it actually did work, just not on his mobo.... this i know cause we tried it out on a custom machine and it ran fine...

Tried to install a new hard drive the other day, tried to make the old drive slave. Simple, right? Turns out that Crapaq thoughtfully neglected to label the jumpers on the HD, so i had to spend an hour fiddling them around till I found a setting that worked... The only question i have now is this: Did children in third world countries benefit from the 1/32 of a cent that a label on the hard drive would have cost? Probably not, considering that the added step on the assembly line would have actually created jobs for the kids....

Ah yes, Compaq. The perfect example of a free market at work.

A Compaq? I had to work on a Crackhead Hell computer already. Took two people a half hour just to figure out how the heck the case could be removed without maiming it.

I just write a huge slam about Compaq and lost the connection - which is just as well - I ranted.

STAY AWAY!!!!!!

My 2 rules No CompSux, no boxes w/ AOL. That means Period!

I just went through a month of headaches w/ Compsux 'cuz I sold my mechine and was waiting on the parts for the dream and bought a 1.2 AMD from CompSux - the CPU fan quit after 2 weeks and fried - naw yer not gonna fix it - I want a new one. No can do.

The vendor finally made good - not Compaq. Service sux, warranty sux, they byte.

I dunno about how they burn but I sure did feel real good punting it around the room before I boxed it back up.

Enough rant.

Sulfuric Acid works great - 93% grade, lol!

Heres a simple math equation for you
A + B = HEADACHE WHEREAS (A=COMPAQ) AND (B=COMPUTER TECH) NO MATTER HOW YOU DO THE MATH THE ANSWER IS THE SAME.

At school in socials we have some compaqs (486 and pentium). I was only able to get into the bios setup twice, and that was when it asked me to after I purposely screwed up the jumpers and erased the eisa config! Luckily these are high end upgraded corporate machines. The two pentiums were acually used to be 486's (they use riser cards which were replaced), they had 48mb of IBM edo parity simms and IBM scsi hard drives. They came from Canada Trust. Both are running win98se not too bad. They even have built-in network and sound cards.

Since you've opened the forum to such dirty deeds, I guess I'll admit to mine...I replaced a power supply for a friend the other night. No biggie, but it was a 90 watter *shudder* in a Gateway PIII system. I feel so used, and I'm already dreading the next time I have to do it...

Best way to deal with a CP: gut it (but wear a bio-engineering protective suit). Bought a Presario 7360 last summer. I should have known something was wrong after I installed a scanner and it hung before it even got to the Win98 desktop because the S3 video chip was incompatible with Adobe Type Manager (came with the scanner). I had to download and install a 14MB SoftPaq just so the video would work. You can't talk to a live CP Tech Support rep (oxymoron?), you can only do it by e-mail or by posting to forums on the web. So, I kept the CPU, RAM, CD-ROM, and floppy and replaced the wimpy (90W power supply) case with an Enlight, replaced the component that CP calls a "motherboard" with a Tyan (something with a REAL BIOS!!), and bought Creative PCI128 sound and ATI Xpert98 AGP video cards to replace what had been onboard sound and video. Haven't had a problem since. Yeah, I wasted a warranty and spent an extra $150, but I have a computer that works now.

I have a comcrap and it works pretty good......but then again the only comcrap parts are the hard drive and motherboard and for what I do it suits me fine..... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I work for them {notebooks}& believe me I don't like it one bit. Heck I wouldn't buy a compaq and I work for them. I get alot of calls w/ h/w failures right out of the box.

My Advice DON'T BUY COMPAQ PRODUCTS!!!!!
HEADACHE HEADACHE HEADACHE HEADACHE HEADACHE

IF YOU HAVE A COMPAQ...
MAY THE LORD BE WITH YOU!

PS.
IF YOU HAVE BEEN Q U I C K R E S T O R E D
It would be in your best intrest to not have us log calls where sup's have been requested and calls have been escalated.
My Motto is be nice, we'll be nice
cuss us out you'll end up screwing yourself.

Remember we don't make the rules we just abide by them and are trying to feed our families.
and to those who understand this thanx!!!!!!

An update and part of the reason I hate them so. Who else would put a 1Ghz PIII onto an Intel 810 chipset board and then use the onboard video???????? In all fairness to Compaq, the people have so much **** starting at bootup (anti-virus, voice recognition, ICQ, some Compaq ****, some things I didnt even want to know, in fact everything except my recommended Zonealarm for their cable) that my PPro 200 will boot before that Compaq will let you log off and back on.

lol, we all hate Compaq's here too, we have a few machines. My workstation is a Compaq Deskpro...heehee...I had Win 95 installed at first. But I got tired of rebooting once every three hours so I wiped the machine and put Best Linux in there instead. Hasn't crashed once since. Sure, there's still trouble, but not half as much as before.

Actually we've been having more problems with our Dell machines lately. They are walking in Compaq's direction...

Well since everyone is venting Compaq problems, i might as well warn everyone to NOT try to install an SB! Live card for a Compaq Presario. I just bought one for my mom's boyfriend (which he bought like 6 months ago), and all I did was get a headache and three friday nights (and counting) stolen from me. First off you cant remove the onboard sound BIOS wise, if you remove it in windows the back up partition thinks you reformatted and gladly brings back you onboard sound. Now an SB1 Live 5.1 card will work, but the program is mad buggy, crahes the computer whenever you try to test the speakers or mess with any of the creative settings. It crashed so bad once I had to reformat. And when I tried my old card the program works but no sound. Ehtier way, this comfirms the fact that a compaq = POS.

Hahaha, I've been laughing my **** off reading you guys comments. You guys made my day. My first encounter with this Evil was with my bothers PC. I was there visiting and guess how I spent my time. I could never sleep well since then http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Since then I advocate to others the evil of Compsux. Thank the Gods that we don't use them at work. I will quit and become a hermit. Spread the word so that other don't fall prey to this evil.

Keep scrubing guy because I still scrubing myself and it's been four years since the last encounter.

By the way, E-machine is the Demon daughter of Compsux.

CCComppaqqq... brrrr.. shudders.. Remeber WAY BACK when every **** THING inside was proprietary? You couldn't even swap memory! **** things. I have had to support garbage, uhm, sorry, PC's like Compaq's for years. If you do crack open one, DONT BLOW THE DUST OUT! God only knows that the dust is the ONLY thing that is SUPPOSED to be there! lol

And what about their "legacy" boxes? OOOHHH! THAT was a good idea.. (right)

We took all ours and dontated them. We found the opnly real good use for a Compaq was the WRITE OFF on your taxes when you donate it!

For everyone else, remember, there still is a place where you can belong. What you ask? Well, all of those engineers that built those HIGH QUALITY PACKARD BELL's went to work somewhere, didnt they? Yea, boy. Packard Bell's, Compaq, E-Machines, Acer, now THAT'S quality!

So dont feel bad about working on the one. Heck, I have had my hands in so much of this garbage that my finger nails have fallen off, my first and second knuckles have fused together, I have lost all feeling from my wrist to my elbows, and I have this twitch. Scrub away boys. I recommend latex gloves next time...

LOL

From the sounds of it, it seems the Compaq retail consumer line is an afterthought. As a pro, I would rather work on a Compaq server anyday. Then again, maybe that's why we don't use any Compaq workstations.

True story: when I was in the Balkans recently, I took it upon myself to blow out one of the ancient but Ok Compaq P-Pro 180 workstations. Ten minutes, a few screws and a whole bunch of dust later, the machine wouldn't boot, never worked again :-(. So I think you are on the right track with the dust thing.......

Hey Guys---

Im a newbie but got ahold of a Deskpro EM (PIII-5000/128 ram/10gbhdd/ 512 cache etc) works pretty darn well except the Norton bechmark is low (mine clocks at "233" when it should be circa "255-266")---i suspect bus design--but--i opened the unit--seems well made..has Seagate Barracuda HDD(veery fast program loads!!), case is study and uses good quality machine screws etc. Mach runs very quietly (yes- the fan IS working!)

funny thohgh-i couldnt get the stupid case open-initially--found out about that stupid "security" setting in the setup!..i fooled for l hour..no screws in the case but wldnt budge even when i squeezed the side buttons.... has an ATI rage (I think) videcard which doesnt allow me to set the refresh rate(so monitor flickers a bit)...

otherwise, I really cant complain (yet!)--paid less than $300 for a PIII500 in great shapoe!..cdrom/NIC/but no modem..
