If you are like me who install and uninstall software regularly then you should run a reg cleaner to remove tmp and invalid files. I've been using System Mechanics to clean the registry for awhile now. It does a lot more but cleaning the registry is the main reason I use it.

To get to it:
Hit Start> Run> type in regedit and hit ok.
It is best to make a backup copy before messing with it, and back up any important data.
When you get the registry window open, hit Registry in the tool bar then Export Registry File. This will make a copy of the registry. It must end in .reg If you double click this .reg file it will copy back to the registry.
I use regclean by MS and Registry Cleaner. They are different programs and the Registry Cleaner program will actually find all remnants of old programs and ask if you still have that program on the pc. If you don't, it will delete all references to it. I do this about twice a year or if I develop a problem that I can't fix otherwise.
Have fun but BACKUP the important stuff!

run - "regedit"
before you do ANYTHING, save.
then do your little cleaning.
But I advise against this. I had many apps. do duplicate checks and registry cleaning. Well, it didnt start up the second time. I'll never clean my registry again. Its fine the way it is.
its only a difference of 5 mb max
just dont do it
but if you just HAVE to, pcworld.com has many downloads for free that I use.

jv16Power Tools works great for me for cleaning the registry. It's free and it makes an automatic backup when you do a cleaning. I think majorgeeks.com has it.
:t
jv16 Power Tools work great for me as well.
Do it on a weekly basis, don't be too strict with yourself ;)
I think our friend G has something to say regarding the issue :)

Confused, your reg may be only 5 MBs, but it's being iterated constantly when you make the slightest move. So reg size does make a significant speed difference. And yes, it is potentially dangerous, but I've used M$$ Regclean for years w/o a single problem on many systems, tho never tried it on Win2K or XP.
Note that the reg-size change doesn't occur after it's been cleaned, but only after it's been recompressed. W98 does this w/Scanreg /optimize, and there are progs out there for NT-core OSs.

Easycleaner will do the trick, and yes it does need cleaning or else hings will get a lil bit slow and if your in 2k/xp once the reg exceeds a certain limit size it can be quite a task getting it all sorted

I've used all that's mentioned here and they all work. The main one I've been using though is shareware, Registry First Aid (http://www.simtel.net/pub/pd/60759.html) I put it to use many times a week (I try a lot of software). It's easy and IMO, also very safe. It's the only registry cleaner I've used that (knock on wood) has never removed/changed something it shouldn't have and caused a system crash. It does have a undo backup system just in case.
I'm trying that Registry First Aid right now, Cluedo, looks like a quite nice tool indeed :)

REGCLEANER at JV16.ORG (http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/index.php) is without a doubt one of the best and not only because it is free, but it has matured over a few versions. And check out the rest of his software... like the cute 666 Devil Test ;)

Hi ND, herosrest and all.
Firstly, I hope you all have a great 2003. This goes for all members of Syopt.com.
I will post a thorough reply by Sunday. I'm beta testing and producing reports so time is tight.
My primary Windows Registry cleaner is RegVac at www.superwin.com. The program is very sound and the developer is happy to reply quickly to support queries. In addition, all updates of RegVac (minor and major) are free and unlimited.
My secondary Windows Registry cleaner is jv16 Power Tools (I use this to confirm RegVac entries for deletion) besides additional benefits. I also use M$ RegClean V4.1a.
I'm beta testing a very powerful Windows Registry program called RegSafe. It provides Windows Registry viewing, editing, comparison, and full or partial restoration within a protected, risk-free environment. In addition, advanced features such as (ACL) Permissions comparison and restoration provide important benefits to Windows NT/2000/XP users. RegSafe V2 provides Registry restoration from DOS with the following SOS options: DOS-SOS; NTFS-SOS; RC-SOS. www.regsafe.com
I also use WinRescue (98 through to XP) to back up my Windows Registry to HDD and FDD. Again all updates are free and unlimited www.superwin.com
With Drive Image 2002 and GoBack, this about covers me. More later though.

Easy Desk Software (http://www.easydesksoftware.com/moresoft.htm) Not cheap, not simple, but perhaps simply the best. (Our old HP w/98SE ran with nary a belch or hiccup after using tools from here. For once I also read the instructions from both the website and came with the software. But there was both a time and money factor in using them that was hard to overlook.)
I have finally finished my testing of Windows Registry tools. My initial investigation started and finished at the following links

I've used regclean for awhile now, and it's only once screwed up my registry - fortunately for only one app, not the OS, so I was able to get that fixed easy. I'd recommend that as you can get it for free and really doesn't mess up - I've ran it MANY times, so with how the registry is so lovingly setup, it's bound to wipe a key eventually - or you just have plain old bad luck.

I have found inly 1 way to remain safe in M$.
Back up the registry before any changes.
If the new move ******. Get into Dos... and goback.
For the paranoid - keep an up to date mirror using one of those
removable drive thingy's. Also take index.dat back to a mirror of it's install state. Copy it ... to anywhere ... change the file extension to .txt .... and examine at your leisure.
The Ie about command is an interesting little toy.
So is the Gopher.
And telnet... and 3270... etc .... corse u use 'em al the time.
