Although you can still get controllerless (soft modem)ISA modems, I have an ISA Lucent Winmodem lying around here somewhere. Controllerless modems or (winmodems) as they are sometimes called, were poor performers in many cases with older pentium machines, and winmodems usually have pretty bad error control. Downloads would stall or connections would be dropped if the computer's resources were severely taxed. Also,,external modems are always (Hardware modems),,i think.... I have a usr/3com 56k int,,my whole computer could crash,,and my download is still going as long as i dont shut off the computer, hardware modems are good at that. but winmodems aren't all bad, my ISA 56k LTwinmodem consistently connects faster than my ISA usr/3com,,the LT connects at 52k,,always,,and the USR/3com won't do better than 49k,,,, hope i didn't bore you,,and i hope you were enlightened a bit... dos7 SysOpt.com
