I've been using DI as a backup/recovery tool for my complete harddrive, but need to do more. Since DI copies sector by sector instead of file by file, does that completely eliminate the ability to do a selective backup of a partition/drive as opposed to all of the partition/drive?

You can use DI 4.0 to image a partition without any problems.
You can also restore any information from an image file back to anywhere you specify by using the DI File Editor.
I store images of all my partitions on a separate HD for safety and have no problems restoring an entire partition or individual files from one HD to another... great for experimenting with new software, just create a new image file and store it and if you have problems just restore the image back to the previous condition. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks, Harold, but am I right with my statement regarding the absence of selective file backup capability, meaning complete partition images are the only way?

Dave's got it right, however, once you create and store an image of a partition, you can extract individual files from that image and place them wherever you wish. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
