I've been getting a lot of freezes with w98 after a clean install, and I've done a scandisk and defrag, but I still get freezed out, so now I intend to do a reinstall over w98se from true dos of (Not a clean install) w98se, I've saved all the stuff that's important already, but since I've downloaded and installed all the patches from M$ and norton , I also have partitioned and installed other win systems, and my boot ini is configured to display the 3 systems at boot up, my question is; will my configuration settings the upgrades and the mbr change as a result of reinstalling the way I've mentioned here. Thanks...

The bootloader may well get broken. That can be fixed by running FIXMBR and FIXBOOT from the Recovery Console in the others.

Lotsa times those M$ patches will screw up the system. Ram can and quite often does cause crashes, lockups and blue screens, get and run a copy of Memtest 86. Run SFC (System File Checker) from the start > Run device in Win98..it will look for and usually find any corrupt files, and give you the opportunity to replace them...saves reloading Windows...which dosn't always overwrite all files, and never overwrites files from other apps like video or sound drivers ect.

Boot from the WinXP CD and choose Repair with the Recovery Console. When you're in, type those commands.

Sometimes life is a trade off. A sixpack of beer or a new floppy drive? Tough choice that one. :(
