Hello,
I am re-installing win98 se on a friends computer. I have done this process hundreds of times so am intimatly familiar with the process but I have never had this happen to me.

When the setup process finishes scanning the hards disks, it says (like normal) "copying files necessary for windows setup"...

It then waits two to three seconds and then drops me back to the DOS prompt.

Any one have any ideas?

Thanks

Jim

copy all the files from the win98 folder on the cd to the hard drive and run setup from there.

I have just fdisked the stupid thing and am reformatting and then will try that.

Is there a way to copy the CD (directories and all ) with one DOS command?

Thanks

all you need is the copy command. do a /? at the end for all the tags.

for win98, create a folder called win98 on your hard drive. then you just need to go to the win98 directory on the CD and do a copy *.* c:\win98. run setup from c:\win98

THanks for the advice. I have tried it and have gotten the same results.

I have also turned off the bios virus checker but that didn't make any difference.

Any other ideas? I am really frustrated with this..

I finally have it working however, I am not sure what caused my problem. The CDROM that was in his machine was 2x.. and when I switched it out for one of my old 48x drives I got the same problem. But when I moved the drive from secondary master to slave on the master IDE cable...it took off.

SO..which one fixed it..now idea.

BUt at least it is installing windows now...shesh..two days to figure that out... I wish I could have billed him at my normal billing rate!!!
