I learned everything I know about customizing windows operating systems at Virtual Plastic. Here is there section on modifying and replacing system files complete with a list of all the potential places a system file is backed up on and how to replace them. As far as a system restore feature, I don't recall there being one. However there is a System File Checker, and thats whats replacing your file for you. Hopefully this helps.

If you try to delete some important system files like DLL's or EXE's, Windows 2000 will just put them back. It's a built-in security feature to prevent people from screwing up their Windows. You cannot turn it off, as far as I know.

If you really need to delete those files, you can try booting using a Windows 98/ME boot diskette and delete those files from DOS.

You can fool that feature by replacing the file in the DLLCACHE folder first. That's where Win2K pulls the replacement file from. ;)
