hi everyone.
I was wondering the minimum system requirements to run XP?
Im using a pentium 2 400 @ 533 mhz, with 192 Mb RAM.
Im running windows 98se, but i have the XP pro disk and was considering changing the OS.
stick with 98 or run XP?
happy holidays,
Eli

Main page for XP (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/default.asp)
You can download the MS upgrade advisor from here but it is a very large download.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp(About 40MB I think.) It's not perfect, but gives a good idea of your hardware and software compatibility.
Personally I'd recommend staying with 98/SE. (Much depends on your BIOS also.) While it may run, it may not run well, if just meeting the minimum requirements.
While, IMO, it's best to do a full fresh install, you might consider installing as an upgrade which gives you an option to revert to your previous OS. Can't really tell you how well that works...I went with a dual-boot option...which if you have the space...is also an option to try XP and save your original OS.

thanks cluedo
ya, I think im just gonna stick with the 98SE, and then run the XP pro when i get a new machine in a couple weeks...keep it simple.
likely run a dual boot on the new one...
cheers

Don't even bother with a dual boot. After you use 2000 or XP for awhile you'll never want to go back to another garbage 9X OS again.
Yes why not try duel boot it is fun and you will gain a lot of knowlwdge in the process.

I have xp running on a P2 300 128 ram no prob. Also on a comcrap celery 366 256 ram no problem. It even runs much better under xp than with win 98 that it was designed for.
If you have the xp pro disk run the setup checker and see what will not pass and if possible download the drivers or updated software before so you can burn it for after the install.
If you can run XP run Pro you may need the added features in the future especially if you are going to do any web design (IIs won't run in Home).
Xp is worth the install and you will never go back!
