There is a special version os MSCONFIG available for Win2k. It is not included on the CD.

download the file from Bill's link. It is the msconfig from winxp. Win2k didn't have an msconfig at all. Dunno why.

Why don't you just click on the start button then run and type msconfig and then enter and low and behold msconfig. Select the startup tab and uncheck the programs you don't want activated at start up.

AllGamer

When I used 2000Pro I had to download XP's msconfig file. It worked perfectly. Download that file Bill has linked up there and you'll have no problems.

Uum because it will

Maybe he did an upgrade instead of a clean install?

If you do a clean install of win2k, it will NOT have msconfig. It's just one of those things.

BipolarBill

Even an upgrade will disable MSCONFIG from Win98. There is no MSCONFIG in Win2K. End of story.

Midknyte

yeah, that's true.

AllGamer

You are right my appologies. I haven't used 2000 since XP has been out. XP has msconfig and I was thinking I used it as well in 2000. Well I installed 2000 on an extra machine and typed msconfig and file not found. I wonder why they didn't have that in 2000.

BipolarBill

I think that the reason MS left it out was concerns about Administrative privileges and being able to restrict access to MSCONFIG.

extreme_gamer

i guess since windows2k is somewhat for business, they left out msconfig so the workers using win2k couldnt stop something on bootup... i dunno

well i just finished downloading the "xq-xsetup-63.zip" file... and will plan on using it

AllGamer

well there's always this other Myth about Win2k that it has just been a successful Win95 sort of major beta

that's why then they made WinXP

i need a simple answer to a simple question... yes or no, does windows 2000 have msconfig, or any program that can disable programs on startup?

NO

win2k does not have MSCONFIG

YES

besides MSCONFIG there are prenty of other software that can do that easy for you

else you can manually fiddle in the Registry pool in all the RUN keys

and then the Autoexec Bat

and the Win.INI

and the System. INI

and the StartUp folder

and the Services

and then maybe whatever else is hooked up to it

extreme_gamer, take a deep breath

Ok, now ill sum this all up for you

Win2k does not come with MSCONFIG
But you can d/l the one that comes from WinXP, and it will work fine, just click on the click listed earlier.

OR

You can d/l that program, x-setup, which has all of the options that MSCONFIG has, and more, and it works on all windows systems.

Hope that clears things up for you.

extreme_gamer

i d/l the msconfig.zip file and it worked... though at first win2k wasnt happy:rolleyes:

so thnx for all the patience and everything else!:t
