Bought an LG burner at a computer shop close-out sale. It's a bit older. It's an LG 12x10x32. The setup floppy it came with is a DOS generic and no burner programs will recognize the drive. I checked out the LG drivers website and it all looks greek to me. Can someone suggest which driver I should download. I'm not sure I should download the newest on in this case.

Thanks

I have an LG burner, you dont need any driver let Windows detect it and load the default ATAPI drivers. Then install the burner software you can get a trial copy at the Nero site.

Still no go. Windows says the best driver is already installed. NTI CD creator says " No CDR or CDRW drive detected"
So there must be another problem. A yellow flag apperars in Device MGR under CDRoms. The not within properties says
"Not present, not working properly or the drivers not installed"
I have uninstalled it. The CDRW works as a normal CDrom though so it is there, just not as a RW.

I really wonder what can be a problem
Try flashing it with latest firmware.
Try uninstalling the rellevant IDE ATA/ATAPI contoller and let Windows re-install it.
Or return the burner to the store before it closed finally

Again, as ND said... it could have been damaged, dropped etc.
Clearance stuff has generally been thrown around, in display systems, etc.

And trust me, I know from my HP 9510, 12x10x32 is slow.

But that may be OK for you considering the price :t

I may have got burned on this one (punn intended)
Here's a bit more info.
Item LG 12x8x32 CDRW
Floppy driver included, MSDOS CD ROM extensions with device driver, 1996 LG. Windows 98 SE, says disk does not contain driver information when I try to update the driver.
No kidding it isn't even a burner driver disk. I don't think there were burners in /96.
The driver that windows suggests using is Windows\system\iosubsys\mtmminip.mpd
other driver listed \ choice, ...\system\vmm32\ios.vxd

Windows detects the CDRom as Mitsumi CDROM controler with double speed drive.

Not sure where this Mitsumi name came from.

Any help appreciated.

The mitsumi controller is the generic one that windows provides. Go to LG's site and get the latest.

Thanks, I'll try the LG site.
The CDRW is an LG CED-8120B.
The site seems to be sending me around in circles.
If anyone can find their way through their site to the download section, could you post the link please.

Thanks

Thanks people,
I'll give it a go, I guess the firmware update is necessary. I was going to start that last night , but I was first looking for drivers without the firmware. Had to transfer the driver/ firmware file to a floppy to my second computer (the one with no internet and the CDRW problem) And I indicated A drive for the firmware destination, I know that was wrong, it should be C, right ? Anyways I cancelled the install and went to bed.
I'll get on with it now.
Seems like a large proceedure for a CDRW driver install.

From this link :
http://www.lgeservice.com/CED8120BFirm200-readme.htm

I assume because I'm using win 98SE, the instructions for
"Prior to upgrading to Windows XP" does not apply to me.
Also the proceedurs says it is an upgrade to Firmware versions below 2.00, I don't know anything about Firmware, or If I even have a previous version installed, How do I check ?
Thanks

If the burner is recognized in Device Manager, click on the Settings tab and it will list your Firmware version, or look on the Burner for a label indicating the version number. Some burning programs require an update to recognize different makes of burners, check the vendor's site for updates. My LG 8240B didn't require drivers and until I updated the Roxio software that came with it, it said "no burners are found", a trip to the Roxio site cleared that up.
Good info at his link:

The burner works as a regular CDRom, so that tells me it is not a master / slave,or a primary sec IDE setup problem, its got to be drivers right ? Windows sees a CDROM. Generic Mitsumi.
I cannot get the settings tab to come up in device mgr because a specific CDRW it is not detected, only the generic Mitsumi CDR, yellow flagged.

There are only 2 devices on this computer, The HD is the primary master, no slave, and the burner is on the secondary IDE port, no slave. The jumpers on the burner are: 6 pins, 3 sets of 2, the jumper is on the first 2 vertically, beside the IDE ribbon cable. This was how I got is so I assume it is set for master.

Also can someone tell me about this DMA, how do I check to see if it is enabled.

Thanks again

Did you follow the review at the cdrlabs link? It shows a picture of the label showing Firmware# as well as installation info. You have to click on the Settings tab in Device Manager to enable DMA which you can't do at the moment.
From the installation info at cdrlabs:
"Like most IDE drives, installing LG's CED-8120B was very easy. I took the drive out of the box, switched the jumper from slave to master and installed it on the primary IDE chain by connecting the IDE cable and power connector. When I turned on the computer the BIOS detected it as a PIO Mode 4 drive. LG's Korean website does say it supports UDMA 33, but I could not get that to work.
Windows detected the drive perfectly. I went into Device Manager and saw that DMA was already checked and I was ready to to start burning."

I checked my LG manual and it sounds as though you do have it set to Master, the jumpers next to the ribbon are for Master. Try highlighting it in Device Manager and then click on Remove and reboot and let Windows reinstall it.

Thanks Buji, sorry to be a pain, I think I'm almost there.
I removed the generic rom in device mgr. Rebooted and Windows (98SE) did not detect a new device upon reboot. I went into "install new hardware" and it didn't find it there either.
however , again, it still works as a regular CDRom, It's my "F" drive and it shows up in my Explorer. I opened a burner program and "no CDR or CDRW detected" message pops up.
So, I guess I'll go ahead with the Driver/firmware download.
Question, This driver zip file seems to be a combination of a driver and firmware up grade, correct. When I was going to install this yesterday, and then I jammed out, the firmware upgrade was requesting I set a drive for the program, Something about cylinders checks. I assume it should be "C" ?
Also I took a digital of the info plate on my LG RW. It shows ROM ver 1.03, is this the Firmware version ? Will try to attach file.

What exactly is firmware ? Does it only have to do with CDRoms ?
Is it info somewhere within the device itself ? Can't quite figure out how a CDRom drive can have this info.

All OK now,
The devices within Device mgr were listed "by connection". When I changed it ti "by type" the proper CDRW was shown and I was able to enable DMA. The burner software now recognizes the CDRW.
Thanks again, Buji
