[ Specs ]
Compaq 533mhz AMD K-6-2
312 sdram
integrated video/audio
(factory motherboard, everything, etc.)
I think i have to reset my bios because I had 2 viruses and one of them rewrote my bios. my computer is still functional but sluggish.
I haven't recently installed anything to make it sluggish, it happened after I reformated.
Also, since my graphics is integrated, it used to work fine before, now anything rendered in 3d is a terrifying 4fps.
I want to know what will happen if I reset my cmos or my bios.
I found the jumpers to reset the cmos but i dont know if my bios is reset-able. Would i have to prepare before i do any of this like recording down values from something?

Resetting the BIOS is easy, simply shut down completely, move the jumper to the other pins, turn on for a few seconds, turn off again and move the jumper back to pins 1-2.
You may have to change a few settings after you are running again. Check an article I wrote a few years ago for help with the settings:

i thought i just had to touch the 2 pins together, so you can actually take the black thing off and reattach it?
attached is a image i drew of what i saw.
when I enter my bios setup, there are very few options because it really crappy. are these the settings that i show have to re-enter into it?
if so, ill just write them down.
after i reset, will anything happen the data HD?
thanx a bunch!

Hi all ,
Just passing though and saw this question posted . I recently had extreme problems getting my system to run at default 2200 speeds , whenever I set the FSB to 133 the whole system became totally unstable . I took apart the whole comp , added componenets from scratch , bought a new PSU , checked my RAM etc etc ...
In the end a very simple action suggested by someone over on Tweaktown forums helped me. I removed the mobo battery when resetting the CMOS and .. hey presto .... no more problems. It seems on some mobos that switching the BIOS settings to " default " / most stable doesnt really do this at all ! Someone else has since told me that for the CMOS to be reset completely , u have to leave the jumper switched for 5 mins or more. Whether this is true for all mobos or not I dont know ..
I`m no expert tweaker, but in future any BIOS flashes etc by me will also have a battery removal thrown in !
Oh and dont worry, your BIOS will remain whatever version u have updated to.
Merry Xmas ,

Since it's a Compaq, make sure you have the Latest Compaq SoftPaq to set and fix the F10 partition

i reset the cmos, i noticed a 300% speed increase in boot time!
but, my framerate in anytthing 3d is still 4fps.
could it be something serious because my video is this integrated stuff on the mobo?
I'll try and reinstall the driver.
I've already downloaded the softpaqs in an effort to fix it before all this but it had no effect.
the softpaqs are written to the bios right, not the cmos?

im pretty sure i installed th correct driver, i d/led it off the compaq site.
it used to perform way better before the virus.
can the integrated video portion of the mobo be altered by the virus?

Hi ,
If the driver is ok , and u recently formatted your hard drive etc , is all your software up to date ? Do u have the latest version of Direct x ( 9 ) etc ?? When u say its not working as well as before , can u be more specific ? Is it just the FPS rate ? Do u have any new software installed that could be interfering with the FPS ?

I have the latest DX, i ran the DXDIAG and the fps in that was best iv'e sen in a while. the fps in the dxdiag was way faster than anything else 3d. I'm pretty sure none of my software is interfering with the video. i'll go throught and uninstall some stuff but i doubt any effect will come of it.

Hi ,
Sounds like the fps rate is not related to a graphics card problem if the DX Diag fps is good ..is it comparable to before the virus ? I dont have any knowledge bout your gfx card or mobo , so a bit at a loss as what to suggest from here . Maybe someone else on here does ..I`d give a full list of your system specs first . Do u have any Mad Onion info from before the reformat to compare with now ?

as a matter of fact, after my previous post, i dowloaded mad onion but my card can't even support bumpmapping so it didn't even let me get a score. the framerate was about 3fps in mad onion. the fps is extremely comparable from before and after.

Hi ,
Ok , how bout the latest Via 4 in 1 drivers , got those installed ? A good prog for looking at your system and identifying all the components as well as making some optimising suggestions is Sisoft`s Sandra ..u can find it at
http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.php?dir=&location=sware_dl&a=demon&lang=en
See if this comes up with anything .
