my main box has 16c,256c,hi color 16bit,true 24 and 32 bit, my back up has only 16 and 256. I am assuming this relates to the capabilitys of the vid card, but in the docs and box they come with, find no statement of their capabillitys. how does one know this short of trying it. some of my proggys require hi color 16bit.

It does depend on the card as to what it supports, also it depends on the amount of vram, if it doesn't have enough vram it can't support the higher numbers. E.g. A 1MB version of a card might only support 256 colours @ 1024x768, but a 2MB version with the same chipset could support 16bit colour @ 1024x768.
try lowering the resolution, this may give higher colours.
Hope this helps alittle

Make sure the video drivers are installed also...does the other PC say "VGA Adapter" under display properties? If so, the drivers are not installed...or you really have some ancient machine that only supports vga.

My 1meg cirrus logic could only do 256 colors at 1024*768. It could do 16bit color (65536 colors) at 800*600. It's a limitation of the amount of ram.
